Asamyukta Hasta or Single Hand Gesture

Asamyukta hastas are done using single hand. The Natyshastra mentions about 28 Mudras ie upto Trishula Mudra. There are four new mudra added to this list ie Kataka, Vyagraha, Ardhasuchi and Palli. These Hand Gestures are a Part of Angika Abhinaya. I shall be explaining each of these Mudras with reference to the shlokas of Abhinayadarpana.

This is a wonderful site. My daughter is 5 years old and she has started learning Bharatha natiyam recently. Whenever she practices her mudhras she keeps asking me the meaning of them and I was able to explain only a few of them as I remembered only a few from my memory(I had a few years of learning when I was quiet young). When I found your website, my daughter was more excited than I was… Thanks a lot for your effort….

Hi Femila, it feels nice to know that this site is helping you. Your words will keep me motivated. May your daughter excel not only in dance but every where. Thanks again.

I am not clear why the other sites show the images of only 15 asamyukta hasta mudras whereas u r telling there are 32 mudras. I will appreciate more if alongwith the names of the mudras, u would show the images also.

Hello Radhika, Mahaganapatim song from the movie called “Morning Raga” could be a good choice. Else doing a traditional Puspanajali and any kautukam could be fine.

There are 3 versions of katakamukha but they are not done along with the shlokam- I remember 2 of them- one is the one that has been posted and the other is kapita with the 3 fingers- middle, ring and pinkie, opened like in hamsasye- I cannot remember the 3rd- maybe somebody can share this information. Thank you!

  26. Anjali

@Ang, last one, is when you have first three fingers the thumb, pointer and middle joint like in the picture and the last two fingers the ring and pinkie rolled in.
