Can we learn Bharatnatyam online?

Having learnt the dance form in the traditional Guru-Shishya (Teacher-Student) mode with intimate physical lessons for 10 years, this is a question that I am trying to answer as well! But with the changing paradigms and thinking, people are trying to find newer ways to interact and help each other. The emergence of social networking sites is a case in point.

I am encouraged by the fact that there are resources that have tried to transfer knowledge on dance online and through books. A popular online resource that teaches dance is Learntodance.com. On the last count, the site has been bookmarked by 580 people on del.icio.us ! (search for dance). Another approach is a book on Bharatnatyam called “How To Bharatanatyam” (A Step By Step Approach to Learn the Classical Dance Form) by Jayalakshmi Eshwar.

The renowned Sri Devi Nrithyalaya has some good Videos and DVDs on Bharatanatyam. Interestingly, they are promising to provide an “online individual tuition” to study Bharatanatyam online. I would love to hear comments if any of you have enrolled for this course šŸ™‚

So please stay tuned as we start the experiment on Bharatnatyam through this Blog. I intend to have a instructor style postings with Videos and images to help you get a hang of the basics on Bharatanatyam. Your comments will be a huge encouragement for me.

I must finally emphasize though that there is NO substitute to a traditional Guru to learn classical Indian dance.

Our daughter is 7 years old and has been training for last two years. I am also interested to know the basics. This helps a lot with the practice. She was able to spot a few of the mudras and it is always fun to learn more. Thanks a ton for this website and the great social service you are doing.

    Hi,
Anjali, are you affiliated to Sri Devi Nrithyalaya to place this dead link here?
    It’s ā€œonline individual tuitionā€ never took place.
I know a few girls who tried to join, but were told that everything was “under construction”, and there were no students learning online.
Now all Sri Devi Nrithyalaya’s web site has been “under construction” since more than 4 months.
It is not helpful to add dead links.

  14. Anjali

@Anuradha, Thank you for the update. I had added the link way back in 2007. Their page and information existed well before mine. My website and what I do is all inspired by that. Well I was not aware that online tuition never took place with Sridevi Nrithyalaya. Now we offer online training and anybody who lives outside India can take benefit of the lessons offered.

Hi Anjali, I loved your website. I need some information on completing my exams in Bharatnatyam. I have been learning Bharatanatyam for 8 yeras and could not complete my junior exams. After a break of 6 years I have rejoined dance classes. Can you tell me exams that I need to sit in to complete my Vidhwath. Is there any age limitation to sit in the Junior, Senior and Vidwath exam ? and do I need to go into shaastriya singing classes also incase I have to complte my vidwath?

  17. Anjali

@Pooja, Thank you. Frankly I am not aware of your syllabus. Which university are you a part of?. But you can expect the whole a margam for presentation. You own Choreographic presentation. Singing the dance songs with taalam. Yes some knowledge of music is helpful.

  18. Sneha

First of all many thanks to you for the site! It is helping me a lot to come back to dance after a gap of 15 years. I learned Bharathanatyam for 10 years and then a gap after marriage. I am starting it again now and your site is immensely helpful. I have couple of requests – can you please post the bols of Jatiswaram because in your video the sound is not clear. Also can you please post video of Natanam?

    Thanks again!

    Best Regards,
    Sneha

  20. Usha

    Hi Anjali,
Thankyou for the effort you are taking in teaching the public about Bharatanatyam. I am currently in USA and want to teach my 4yr old daughter Bharatanatyam through your site. My questions are:
Is this the rite age to teach her or do i need to wait till she turns 5yrs.
If i follow your site from the scratch step by step will i be able to teach her bharatanatyam fully?

  21. Anjali

@Usha, you can always encourage your daughter to dance. The right age where she could formally learn from a teacher could be around 6yrs. This website as of now has a lost of basic information and intermediate dances. Learning under a teacher’s guidance is always better. The term “fully” sounds impossible to me because the subject matter is so vast. I have been learning since I was six and still continue to while in my early thirties and thoroughly enjoying it. Let your little one enjoy the process. Good luck !!!!!

hi Madam, I was looking for variations of sarikal adavu. However I did not find sixth step of Sarikal Adavu. 7th and 8th I found on youtube. Can you please upload 6th step video. I also want to give you a gentle reminder about ā€˜Natanamā€™, few months ago I requested you to upload Natanam video. It would be great if you upload that too.

I was interested in personal training and had posted in the past however there was no response from you. Please let me know if you have any plans to publish the DVD or videos for Jathishwaram, Tillana, Shabdam, Varnam, Javali, Natanam adinar (Kirthanam)

    Awaiting your response.
