About Me

Namskaram !

My name is Anjali Nandan and ‘am currently in Plano,TX, USA. I have been learning Bharatanatyam from the age of 6. The learning has mostly been in Mumbai from late Smt. Madhuri Kelkar. I am a “Nritya Visharad” in Bharatnatyam from Bharatiya Sangeet Samiti.

I have got the good fortune to work along with Padmashri Smt. Hemamalini as part of various dance Ballets. It was a Divine experience working in her productions like “Mahalakshmi”, “Savitri” and “Geet-Govind”. She is a graceful and disciplined exponent of Bharatanatyam.

Apart from online lessons her school Natyam Academy in Plano, TX offers Bharatanatyam lessons to interested students in Dallas/Plano/ Frisco communities.

I am not any expert in the field having seen many greats in this art form. This Blog is a humble attempt to provide some information on the dance form as I have learnt it.

Thanks for your help and encouragement along the way!

Note (Updated Sep 21, 2009): Thanks for all the comments, suggestions and encouragement. I truly appreciate each of that.  To enable a better format for our discussion, I have added forums to the website. Request you to discuss your questions and ideas there.

my daughter is aged 5 years and is learning this dance form by local teacher-my problem is she is being trained in group and her teacher tells that she should practice at home.-the problem is that neither i nor my wife knows any dance form-how to help her practice-are there any training materials available

  21. Anjali

@pankaj, The best could be if you can record during the class. You can talk to the teacher and decide mutually. Reference materials by Shrekala bharat and priydarshini govind are available in online shops like Kalakendra.

  31. Deepthi

    Hi Anjali…
Nice to see you share your knowledege on Bharathnatyam.
    i appreciate it.

I had learnt this dance form for 7 years from a kalamandalam trained teacher in kerala and wanted to follow my career in it, but drifted away and its been almost 13 years since i performed this dance. I live in pune (pashan) and have been in search of a good acclaimed bharathnatyam trainer around pashan , with whom i would get opportunities of stage performances. If you can share any of your contacts in this area, i would highly be grateful to you.
Wishing you all the best in the coming year.
    Thanks.

  32. Anjali

@Deepthi, Thanks and good wishes to your family too. I am aware of dancers like Sucheta chaphekar, Shashikala Ravi, and Parimal phadke who are well known dancers. You can approach them.

  33. Alexia

I love the way you teach bharatnatyam(:
I have been watching your videos on youtube for a long time now, and I thought it would be great if you could post up a video on gale bujhanga? I’m not sure how to spell it, but here is a video of shobana dancing to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlykh19lTOo
I don’t want an instructional video, but just a clear version of you doing this dance. Thankyou!

  34. Arthi Ravishankar

    Dear Anjali,

Excellent web site and I have no words to appreciate the effort you have put into explaining the significance of each aspect of Bharata Natyam in detail. Your website is so rich in information that it’s not only useful for new learners, but also for teachers.

To briefly introduce myself, I have learnt Bharata Natyam for abt 15 years from guru Savithri Jagannatha Rao, Chennai based on Kalakshetra style and currently teaching Bharata Natyam in United Kingdon. My dance school ‘Kalalaya Bharata Natyam School’ is located in a place called Ashford(Surrey) in United Kingdom. I notice that many people check with you for dance teachers, please can you refer me to people in the United Kingdom?

    Thanks
    Arthi

  38. Priyatisha

    Hello!
I want to thankyou for how much you have helped me whilst learning Bharatanatym. In the coming April, I will be taking my Grade 3 exam, and I will have to perform the Kuraippu (set to Rupaka talam) . Is there any chance that you could do a video on it? It would help me out alot and Im sure that other may benefit from it too!
Please could you get back to me!<3
