Hi Anjali and friends,

I lost my ghungroo while traveling and have to buy new one soon. I'm not sure how to pick the RIGHT ONE for me - I searched online and was overwhlemed by variety. Which is better (more durable), clothed one or leather? Is it OK that I choose the color that I like better (black or red), or is there any guidelline regarding the color of ghungroo (ex. particular color for certain age group/experience as dancer)? The one I lost had 3 lines of bells. My teacher gave it to me when I started to learn Bharatanatyam. According to a posting on the internet, adult dancers usually wear ghungroos with 4 or 5 lines of bells while child dancers choose 3 or 4 lines of bells. Should I buy a pair with 4 or 5 lines of bells this time? Which is better, 4 or 5 lines?

My teacher has gone back to India and is hard to reach by email. Please send me any advice that helps me choose the right ghungroo for me.

Many thanks!

Sari

Dear Sari,

There are specification on what kind of ghungroos you can wear. I personally like the 4 or 5 lines. For kids I recommend 2 lines. You get
gungroos made to the size of your feet. Go and try a ghungroo before you buy them. Use ghungroos that have buckles instead of strings to tie. Also make sure they are soft on the inside and that it does not hurt you in any way.

Regards,
Anjali
