About Me
Namskar !
My name is Anjali Nandan and ‘am currently in Schaumburg, USA. I have been learning Bharatanatyam from the age of 6. The learning has mostly been in Mumbai from late Smt. Madhuri Kelkar. I am a “Nritya Visharad” in Bharatnatyam from Bharatiya Sangeet Samiti.
I have got the good fortune to work along with Padmashri Smt. Hemamalini as part of various dance Ballets. It was a Divine experience working in her productions like “Mahalakshmi”, “Savitri” and “Geet-Govind”. She is a graceful and disciplined exponent of Bharatanatyam.
I am not any expert in the field having seen many greats in this art form. This Blog is a humble attempt to provide some information on the dance form as I have learnt it.
Thanks for your help and encouragement along the way!
Note (Updated Sep 21, 2009): Thanks for all the comments, suggestions and encouragement. I truly appreciate each of that. To enable a better format for our discussion, I have added forums to the website. Request you to discuss your questions and ideas there.

I liked the basic info you provided. My daughter has just started learning this dance. It is helpful to have an explanation of the various steps and gestures.
Thanks, Nighat Kokan
Thanks Nighat. It is encouraging to know that you like the information. I shall try and post what your daughter would like to understand better. Please suggest the steps and gestures that you would be interested in.
Hi Anjali,
Thanks, really information you gave is very helpful.
I’am 30 yrs old.now started leanrning Bharatnataym.Since childhood very interested but could not get oppurtunity to learn. Now I got good guru.
I want to know whether age matters in learning dance?
Sometimes i’am getting stuck in 3 beat(fast pace)
Do you suggest anything for improving the speed.
With Regards.
N.Nitu
Hi Nithya
Its great to know that you have decided to explore your childhood passion now. Nithya age is absolutely not a factor while learning. What matters is your intensity of focus and attitude towards learning. Our body is like any other machine, if not used will either stop working or would show up some problems. Since you have already started your class, any such problems would just disappear with further practice. Dance would be a great exercise for you.
Unlike the slow and the medium pace, the fast pace (Vilambha, Madhyama and Dhruta as it is called) needs a lost of concentration. When your guru is reciting the sollukattu, you recite them in a numerical form mentally (like 12,123) or just repeat the sollukattu with him. This will help you to focus on your Tala. And perfection is gained through right practice.
Just free your mind from all apprehensions and enjoy your lessons.
Best of luck….
Anjali
Hi Anjali,
Really appreciate for your quick response.
Do you recommend any CD’s for beginners.

hai anjali,
i really liked your webpage and the important matters that you have shown
i have completed arangetam in bharatnatyam and i want to continue the dance or what to step to another classic dance
what would you prefer that i should do
thankyou,
sandhya
Hi sandhya, great to know that you have completed your Arangetam. Do not stop here. Continue your quest for more. Since you have a fair idea of Bharatanatyam you can start your experiments on the same. Go and get some beautiful compositions and songs, try and give your own steps to them. It is a great way to revise. Learning a new dance will widen your outlook as a dancer. If given a choice I would love learning a new Classical Dance.
thankyou very much for your reply anjali and if possible put some videos in the website so that we can get the very good ideas of dance and also of which songs to select and how to compose steps on it
Anjali Nandan
Thanks for putting this art on the web,i really appreciate may be can put some stuff on tabla too.
Thanks again will all the respects.

Hi Anjali,
really nice site and its superb you put up some videos too. I like the explanations very much you gave for Namaskar. I started learning Bharatanatyam recently. How many basic adavus do exist? Could you please name the adavus? The ones I learnt so far are the following: 1.Tattadavu (8 steps), 2.Nattadavu(8), 3.That thei thei tha(4), 4.They ya they yi (4), 5. They hath they hi (4), 6.That they tham (6), 7. That they taha (4), 8. Sarikul adavu (1). Is it correct so far? Would like to learn the proper name of the adavus and a basic overview, what still is more to come. My teacher said we would roughly learn about 60 steps…
Thanks a lot and keep up the good work!!!
Sonia
Hi Sonia……Thanks for your motivating words. I have mentioned the names of Adavus in my previous post “More about Adavus” check this link http://onlinebharatanatyam.com/2007/07/21/more-about-adavus/
The names of Adavu and the number of steps vary from school to school. I shall try naming the adavus as per the sollukettu given by you …3.Tha thei thei tha – Visharu Adavu, 5.They hath they hi- kudittamitta, 6.That they tham- Muruka Adavu, 7. That they taha- tattimitti Adavu, ……… Do not get confused , I am of the view that learning steps are more important than its name……….enjoy your lessons ………keep writing
Hi Anjali

hi Anjali! How are you…
I just wanted to say that i take a high interest in classical indian dancing. Right from childhood, i would watch hema malini’s long stage shows on tv and learn the steps. In fact, i had gotten quite good, but had to stop as my extended family disapproved. But, its been awhile since ive started back on dancing but its much more contemporary dancing. And, i really miss being able to learn classical…when i was younger i was in a country where i could learn it…but, now im in a town that has no facilities. And, i realllyyyyyyyy wish you the best of luck with keeping this website going…because, i know i surely will need it. With the passion that i had and have for it…i really hope that you will be my way to learning the basics at least. Please do not stop posting your videos as i am more of a visual learner. Thanks soo much…and, if u have any idea about other people online that do the same thing as you please do let me know. :]
Sobia
Hi Sobia …I am doing Great. I really understand your feelings and passion for Dancing. Hats off to the efforts taken by you in leaning dance. I wish all the best for you dancing career. I will keep adding more thanks to encouragement from you all Thanks a bunch.
.
Infact I love contemporary style of dance. It has a beauty of its own. I have seen some performances which concentrates on athletic movements, lot of Kalari steps(A martial art from Kerala, India), some added Yogic postures. It was interesting to watch. Where do you learn this from….keep going…and have fun. Do think of sharing this contemporary style with us.
Hi,
Anjali ,
I posted a question ,its rather a problem my daughter is facing with the ardhamandala position.
She is bending her body front when she is trying to get it right .She is 9 years old and just started learning. She is coming home crying as the Teacher admonishes her saying “She has never seen anybody finding the ardhamandala step difficult and it is the easiestone”.In front of the whole class and she comes home and cries. It will be nice if you can suggest a remedy as you are already doing a wonderful job by giving so much
information and lessons about Bharathnatya.
Hi Vidya, I would say ardhamandala is a difficult position for starters. Needs a lot of practice. Make her practice this position daily. Ask her to do a set of fifty counts thrice. since you have seen the video correct her every time she is wrong. Its is a commonly seen mistake . Do not worry. I remember my days of learning since i was constantly bombard by my guru. I was so scared of her that i would make all sorts of excuses for not going. But now I have no regrets. Her guru must be a perfectionist. Keep motivating her and donot stop her training. I would request parents to keep encouraging. She will be fine soon. Thanks.
Thanks Anjali .
I made my daughter read your message to make her understand
that she can get it right . I was really getting worried thinking she
might have a crooked back or some sort of a problem.
Regards,
Dear Anjali,
Love your work. I don’t know if it was just by coincidence that we came upon each others websites.( I try to manage Chidambaram Arts) I would love to link your video in my section on adavus. Though I don’t teach exactly the same style, it can be a great aid to students. With you working on the practical side, it gives me all the more time to work on the theoretical side.
Would love your input.

sangeetha
Hello,

Hope to see your reply soon
thanks

Hi Anjali,
I took my three year old daughter to observe a dance class today as she wanted to learn dance. Seeing the aramandala position, kind of thought it may be too early for her to bend her legs like that. What do you think?
It was so nice of you to post the videos and it is a pleasure watch you demonstrate the steps. Can you please post an mp3 of the beats so that we can play the beats.
while kids practise. I think as a beginner that understanding of thala and the gaps in between is really important.
I’m really pleased by your ability to explain this art form so that I could understand without much effort and your videos are extremely useful.
Thank you so much. Btw, my daughter’s name is also Anjali
Keep up the good work!
Deepa
Hi Anjali,
I really appreciate that you’ve made this website available for everyone. When I watch your videos I think of generosity and the joy of sharing dance.
With thanks and respect,

respected divine artist…..
Thank you for giving basic introduction about this divine art.I was searching for information on mudras and their meaning to paint lord shiva.( painting is my hobby).
All the components of our culture have roots in Vedas. In this fast changing world we are loosing sight of our great traditions. All that is old is not alway bad or out dated. At this moment we need artists like you to speak out and inspire the youngsters to keep the best of this vedic land alive.
I feel those silent narthakis on the walls of the great ancient temples of this country will speak eloquently to any one who goes through your series web pages.I heard that natya shastra is one of the disciplines of Indian wisdom and philosophy which simplifies and makes every one (learned & common people) understand the concept of dharma artha kama moksha.
Add more illustrations photographs, miniature paintings, wall paintings, sculptures from temples , samskrit texts ,to the web site so that this web site develops in to a virtual academy.
Thank you for making the this information available.
wishing you long life , very best of every thing in life

Iam a research scholar from IISc bangalore. Now iam doiong a work in which we are inspiring something from bharatanatyam mudras to describe the various grasps in robotics literature. we are using 28 single handed mudras for this purpose. i have come across a website in which there was urnanbha as one of the mudra. but when i checked other websites they were not mentioning about this mudra. Can u tell me why urnanbha is not popularly mentioned..
Hi Vipin, nice to know about your research topic. Sounds very interesting. We call Urnanbha mudra as Vyagraha. Vyagraha denotes a Tiger. Abhinayadarpanam does not mention about this gesture. But Natyashastra (NS) does talk about Uranabha. I have picked few hastas from other books like NS and hasta lakshana deepika.
thanks anjali for ur information. You solved the confusion which haunted me for weeks.
thanks once again

Hi Ajali
My daughter is getting training in Bharathanaatyam(Kalakshetra style), She had participated in some competitions recently, The most remarks we recieved from the judges were that she is having body shake and the gap between her feet increases while doing fast swaras, It would be greatful if you could give me some tips to reduce body shake and to attain a better control on feet movements.
To be frank, Anjali you are doing a great job, hats off to all your efforts put in to this site.
thanks
aiswarya
Dear Anjali,
It would be bad on my part if I didn’t leave a comment here.Your blog is like a prayer answered to me.I am a beginner and had my initial training in Bharatanatyam in Chennai, but now I stay in Switzerland.I am not able to find a guru here and so your blog is a very useful resource to me so that I don’t forget whatever I have learned. It is unfortunate that I have come here so late
I really appreciate the effort taken by you in keeping this blog so well documented.I was amazed to see the details in all the posts. Also the videos of adavus are just like a guru teaching you.
You are doing a great job indeed!!May God bless you.
Here’s wishing you all the very best and looking forward to more of Bharatanatyam.
Best Regards,
Shalini
Oh Shalini, thanks a lot for this heartfelt appreciation. God Bless you too friend. May you find a Great Guru soon so that you continue your lessons. I’ll try my best to keep you updated. Thanks once again.
Dear Anjali,
Your efforts are superb. I am a beginner and I learnt basic Bharatanatyam in Chennai before coming to UK. I have been surfing the net for a long time to keep in touch with all I have learnt and I hit the jackpot with your website.
All the material, videos and resources are very well presented and very helpful.
Thanks a lot for your efforts,
Wishes and regards,
Sree
Hi Anjali,
I have been searching for mudras of Samyukta & Asamyukta Hastangal on the net. I need them to teach my daughter (Anusha), who is 7 years and learning dance (2 and half years) from Kalamandalam Sreejaya in Bangalore. She has got her exam on 26th January 2007. Though she knows all the mudras, I thought it will help if I can show some pictures of all those mudras. If nothing is available on the web (pics) can you suggest some books on these mudras that I can buy in book stores).
Your help will be highly appreciated.
Best regards,
Ajith Kumar
Hey Sree, Thanks a bunch for your compliments. Its nice to know about your earnest desire to learn this Art. I wish u best of lucks ahead. I will try my best to keep the information flowing. Your feedback will keep giving me direction and do better. Thanks again. God bless you.
Hello Ajith, I thank you for visiting this site. Nice to know about your little dancer at home. May Anusha excel in all aspects of her life and I am sure you will always be proud of her. I wish lots of luck for her exams on 26th. To see pics on Mudras go to my Resources I have linked to sites that show all the mudras. Also I have given meanings and photos of some Asamayukta hastas in this site (check the Index page). A book called “Dance Gestures-Mirrors of Expression” by P.Ramachadrasekhar will be a great reference for her ahead. It is a translation of the sanskrit text Abhinayadarpanam. Visit http://www.giritrading.com, guess you can buy it online. Else there is Abhinayadarpanam by Manmohan Ghosh which is a hallmark Text.
Thank you Anjali for your best wishes. Your response has been of immense help. Thank you once again.
Best Regards,
Ajith Kumar
Hi Anjali,
I am really a bit dissappointed i have asked something on Jan 6th and until now you didnt answer me, I know it is not easy for you to answer each and every silly posts like mine, but for me your answers to my querries are of great importance. hope you will answer me.
My question was
My daughter is being trained bharathanatyam and had participated in some competitions recently, the most comments from the judges were about body shake and the gap between the feet which increases while doing fast swaras and jatis.
can you please suggest something to reduce these. Do you think that she will improve if she does more practice, she is now 10years old.
Hope you will reply this time
We are really greatful to you for your sincere efforts and dedication to familarize bharathanatyam.
Its now my daily routine to visit this site and look for new posts
thanks a lot for all these great help you are rendering to us,
Aiswarya
Hi Anjali, you are doing a great job. Thankyou very much. I am kavya from Germany, I wanted to learn Bharatanatyam right from my childhood, thanks to you that my dream is coming true. The way of teaching is very clear. I have learnt all the steps until now.
Keep uploading. Thanks.
Hi Anjali,
I really appreciate and thank you for your efforts in sharing info about the basics of Bharatanatyam. I am glad to know that there are many people out there who wish to do stuff that are of use to others. Believe me, sharing knowledge can be so difficult, because it is that knowledge that puts us on a higher ground and to be able to share that and let others step up is a huge thing, really.
I started learning Bharatanatyam in the last quarter of 2006. I am currently working and staying in Dubai. My Guru follows the Thanjavur style. But, unfortunately, due to personal reasons, she has relocated to Chennai in Feb 2007, just after a couple of months of my lessons. And since then, I’ve been searching for another Guru to teach me Bharatanatyam. Hopefully, I should find someone, soon!
Which style of Bharatanatyam do you follow? I have seen your instructional videos on youtube and noticed that its a bit different from what I was taught.
Thanks and hope you have a good day!
Kind regards,
Sunita
Hi Ashwaiya, I thank you for the encouraging words. Also nice to know about your daughter who is learning bharatanatyam. I wish her success in every aspect of her life.
Very sorry for not answering you. Indeed your question is not Silly. Increased gap between the legs while doing the fast swaras is very common mistake seen among the beginners. Such an act reduces the beauty of the dance. It looks awkward. It has to be corrected every time she does it. Infact she has to be aware of it. So from our part we can only point it out every time the mistake is repeated. Ask her to practice the Teermanam Adavu and the Jati adavu nonstop in the 3rd speed every day in proper Araimandi. The steps in these adavus are used in the fast swaras. Practicing in front of the mirror will help. You have also mentioned about Body shake ie swaying of waist while dancing. That too will stop once she is aware of it and with right practice. This is my opinion….you can also ask her guru for some tips. Thats it…… nothing much to worry about. She has a long way to go.
Dandavats Pranam,
I’m from Spain and started learning Bharatanatyam a few months ago (I’m 28 now). I only get lessons once a week so it’s great to have your site for doubts and so on.
I have been looking for a site like this for long time and I must tell you that this is the best so far. The videos are very helpful.
Thank you very much!!
Regards,
Gopi Kumari dd
Hi Anjali,
i have been following your vids on utube and reading some of your comments, like on jan 20 th you wrote about
….while doing the fast swaras…
As a musician who can play the swaras on his instrument or sing them I often wonder where it is laid down how to perform them with limbs, legs, waist etc. In dance scripture we talk about the rasa of a swara, and one should perform so that the rasa is felt, either song, music or dance. This seems to have been the older way of yore. You seem to have some knowledge, perhaps you can point out some of your instructional vids to me or let me know of coming up vids where I can check this out?
God bless your work
Nigamaa forgot to add:
Check
Josiane Sarrazin dite Jyoti dances Bharata natyam
style in front of a shrine dedicated to God, but no
explanation is given what rasa she is depicting, if sringara or santa?
It should be sanata anyhow, since it is a temple of peace!
Hi Nigama, Thanks for visiting this site. I saw the video link. The audio is not very clear. what I understood from her actions was its a song on SriRama. Now coming to your question on which Bhava to use. See while doing a dance we have to constantly change our expression in order to explain the meanings of the lines. But we must be aware of the Central Idea of the song. Like in the dance while showing Srirama…bring out the Santa Bhava. While showing the emotions of love bring out Sringara. It is also important what character are you dipicting. If you have a role of a departed lover show the depression on your face and body language. If you are a goddess at war its the Raudra Bhava and not shanta Bhava. I am of the opinion that expression change as per the situation.
Anjali, thx for following up on my questioning.
The above mentioned BN dancer is using a very sacred spot in a church
usually reserved for a male priest only. If made public to conservative folks,
quite alot people would take this as affront, ecspecially if they knew it depicts SriRam in a place dedicated to Christ. It is like offering a christian sermon in a Kali temple. I think Shanta Ras could compensate for this if made clear? To my understanding dance scriptures are presently researched into and in the future we might get a better picture of how Rasa was defined in the old days, see also the topic here
History of Carnatic Music
http://rasikas.org/viewtopic.php?id=4560
From pondering the subject, to me it appears in the beginning there could have been one sringara rasa, with seven bhava rasas. The themes treated below might be in shanta ? This way the vids below would become very meaningful to me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vL0pHRTj7I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7hvVJP3oIA&feature=related
It seems comparatively easy to see rasa in connection with dance or drama, but in the oldest writing this included music as well, so that even shruti and sowith swar had a rasa .
Anjali garu,
In my childhood I had learned basic steps and now when I could not refresh those steps to teach for my 9yr daughter, your web site and videos helped me alot to teach. I had learned in telugu words and I still find these words are easy to follow. One request is, now that my daughter is following all of your steps, I like her to perform these steps on the stage with some music to play all these steps. One request from you is , could you also compose a musical dance with all your steps. So that we can use your steps and dance song and make my daughter do on the stage. Thanks in advance. Very happy with your teaching.
Regards,
Leela
Hi leela
Thanks a lot for your kind word. I donot know how long your daughter has learnt. It is always better to learn classical for atleast 4 yrs before you give a stage performance ie classical based. Only by that time your child may attain perfection in body language. I can understand your concern aswell. I shall try doing something on these lines also. May be I can put up a small music with these steps included. But wait till I finish atleast three more adavus.
Thanks
Anjali
dear anjali,
thank you so very much for your blog! it is so helpful – especially for people like me, who are just beginning to study the dance. keep up the good work!
best,
wenti
Hi Anjali,
This is an incredible site – I was surfing the net to find diagrams/pictures and explanations of the mudras to help my 5yr old daughter with her Bharathanatyam practice. You have exceeded my expectations. Your site is clear, informative, well-organised, culturally rich.
One question – since my daughter is studying Kalakshetra style, will there be much difference in the basics as I would not want to confuse her from what her teacher explains?
Also, Priyanka Prashanth had asked about practising during the “monthly period” times. I am studying Ayurveda and my understanding is that traditionally women fully rested during the first 3 days of this period, not exerting themselves at all as it is the body’s natural way of cleansing itself to maintain harmony and balance in nature (our prakruthi) which explains why our ancient women aged gracefully and lived long and quality lives. Today, our busy modern lifestyles do not give time for rest and we suffer the consequences in our post-menopause years having all sorts of physical, emotional and cognitive ailments. I hope this helps and hope I have not contradicted anyone.
Hey Sheila, thanks for your kind words. Also you have explained Priyanka’s query quite well. This kind of tradition is still followed in our culture. I appreciate your concern. Now coming to your question…there are bound to be difference in the sequences of Adavus and their variation. I would advice you to follow her teacher while practicing. But the Mudras and the theory stuff would be common. You can refer this site for some extra tips and guidance. Keep visiting and adding you valuable comments
Hi Anjali,
This site is a wonderful piece of work from your side and I’ve been reading your posts for almost 4 months now. I’m sure atleast a few of those with enough passion but less time and resources to continue their proper lessons would benefit from this site.
I’m also glad that you enjoy reading my blogs.
Will be in touch. Take care.
Cheers,
Arv.
[Arvind Padmanabhan].
Hi Anjali

I donot have access to any schools or gurus here. I came across your website while searching and its really very good. In addition I also came across these DVD’s- Dances of India – Bharata Natyam Arangetram Dances DVD(Dancer: Padma Chebrolu, Directors: David Morrison) and Dances of india, learning bharatnatyam(Dancer: Padma Chebrolu, Directors: David Morrison) from this website- http://site.voila.fr/dancerindiana/Bharatanatyam_Bharatnatyam_Bharata_Natyam_DVD_VCD_Odissi_Bharathanatyam_Indian_Dance_yoga.html
I wanted to know your opinion before buying these DVD’s. I want you to advise me if these will be helpful. If you can recommend some dvd’s for beginners it would be a great help.
The country I am living in makes it difficult to get hold of things , so I have to resort to learning online or through CD’s.
Pls guide me on how to start and mode of learning. I would be ever grateful.
Thanks in advance and All the best,
Deepa
Hi Deepa , thanks a lot for your appreciation. I am impressed by your strong desire to learn this art. My heartfelt wishes and good luck to you.
Yes this Dvd of Padmaji (learning bharatanatyam)is quite educative and good for a starter. I would also recommend you to buy “Bharatanatyam Adavus – the depth and diversity” by Swathi soft solutions. It is an hour presentation of Adavus in a very stylized manner. Here you can see grace and expression of the dancers. This will also help you to improvise on your movements. You need not buy the Arangetram DVD now.
Hi Anjali, I think that by publishing the bharatanatyam basics video in your blog you give a great gift to all dance students and lovers. And they seem to be very clear and well explained. I would like to do something similar with kuchipudi one day!
Good job. Carry on with it!
Thanks a lot Marzia. Kuchipudi is very vibrant and elegant with its fast pace. Infact I feel fortunate to be receiving such words from dancers like you. Looking forward to some kuchipudi lessons from you.
Dear Madam,
I absolutely am thrilled to find this website! I am currently in the States – I learnt Bharatnatyam for just 3 months, then my work at office got too hectic and I couldnt continue. I still love this dance form and havent found any place here in States where I could continue it. This site is simply too good to be true. I hope I can learn the remainder from this site – at least I can practice it out!! Thanks Again!!!
I really enjoyed exploring your site. I have limited knowledge of bharatanatyam, having seen it only a few times in performance; I have never taken a class. It’s really informative and your site would be a great resource to a student.
Dear Anjali, please have a look at the 2 videos I’ve freshly sent to Youtube.
Here are the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pWpAuM0Br8
Feel free to leave a comment and don’t hesitate to criticize it if it is the case.
hi,
i was just wondering,
about this type of dance, only i want to base it as my theme for my gcse choreography?
instead of being a normal 8 beats is it 9 and a half?
id like to no some information if thats ok?
Anjali,
It’s beautifull all that you have done for disseminate bharatanatyam,
i want to deeply thank you.
Thanks a lot Daniela for your kind words. Your support and wishes will only help the site grow. Good luck!
Hi Anjali,
Thanks so much for this wonderful website ! I am 30 years old and have been learning bharathanatyam for 4 years. I am very serious about bharathanatyam and would like to do this professionally. I am wondering how to improve my form. I have heard that practising adavus daily for atleast 1 hour helps (vs. practising complete pieces like thillans and varnams). What is your experience. How much practise would you recommend on a daily basis for an advanced student who is really serious about bharathanatyam. Thanks much in advance for your response.
Sincerely,
Rekha
Hi,
It has been my lifelong dream to learn bharatanatyam, but since I’m a guy, dance wasn’t encouraged for me and I learned Carnatic music instead. I’ve learned some of the basics from your videos and I’m really happy for that. I will not perform for anyone and nor do I want to, but I’m excited to learn for my own satisfaction!! Thank you for making my dream come to fruition.
N
Thanks Mr N. Its good to know that Dance has been your passion and this site is helping you get closer to it. May god bless you.
Thanks Rekha for your appreciation. If you wish to be a professional dancer you must learn further. You must be a full time devotee of this art. It must be your first priority. A professional dancer spends altleast seven hours a day practicing for their performances. One hour of dance will help you to keep in touch with your basic and to be fit. Think about it. Decide your priorities and make a right choice.
Hi
I’m going to teach my friend’s sister bharatanatyam and i’m not a teacher,i’m a teen and i want to teach her bharatanatyam.Since I haven’t taught anyone i dont know where to start and what order to follow.so can you please help me?
Hi Anitha, thanks for visiting the site. I assume that you are a trained bharatanatyam dancer.
The right age to start learning bharatanatyam is 5 yrs. First class is only an introduction and breaking of ice between students and teacher. Then Begin with introduction to Samapada and Araimandi positions. Some basic warm up exercises. Give them a brief introduction about Bharatanatyam and lord Nataraja. From the Second session onwards recite the Angikam bhuvanam Shloka. Teach the Namaskar. Explain to the kids the importance of namskar. Revise the first session. From the third session onwards start with reciting Angikam bhuvanam sloka, followed by namskar and warmup. Then introduce adavus. You can follow the adavu as you were taught or can follow the order on this website. Every session revise the earlier steps taught. Do not move ahead if the student is not clear with the previous session.
Feel free to mail me if you need any help. Good luck.
Dear , Anjali i am also from pune i have lerned bhartnatyam from different different places and may be because of that i found my own style of dancing bhartnatyam is different rather than the kalakshatra actuly i want to learn more and more about this beautiful dance form you can help me in that
please mail me about your classes
and help me in that
Regards
ARTI
Hi Arti, thanks for visiting this site. Style and differences does not matter as far as the dance is beautiful. Finally a dancer has to go beyond techniques to explore the art. I will be going to US for a year now. Therefore some well known teachers form pune are
Sucheta Chapekar , Mrs. Shashikala Ravi, Parimal Phadke, Uma Tilak, Geeta Nair. Just google and search their names, you will get their contact. You will find lot of other teachers too. Meet them, decide and Good luck.
Hi Anjali,
Do you teach ‘Bharatnatyam classes’? If so, which style do you teach? My daughter will be in Pune in July and August. She is learning Bharatnatyam of ‘Kalakshetra’ style. She would like to join the classes. Please let me know.
Thank you in advance.
Hi Pratibha thanks for visiting the site. I shall mail you with the details.
Hi Anjali
I am living in Vancouver, Canada, I am looking for a guru in vancouver , Canada , Your blog so impressive and I hope you can help me to find a Guru for my daughter to learn bharatanatyam , If u have any information please mail me ,
Thanks
atia
Hi Anjali,
I teach Bharatanatyam at Jakarta, Indonesia. Found your website really interesting and a wonderful resource for students.
Thanks
Janaki
Hi Janaki, It feels nice when you are appreciated by people who are in the same stream. Your words are a great motivation to do better. Thanks a lot.
Hi Anjali,
I just discovered your website and I think it is absolutely fantastic!! I learned Bharatanatyam for around 6 years but I was very young at the time. I had to stop because the classes werent very effective as new students kept joining. Now all these years later I wish I had never stopped. I am keen to get into Bharatanatyam again and will soon see if I can find a teacher in London (where I reside). Your website has enabled me to teach myself the steps again. As I have already learned it before it is coming back very quickly. I think its great that you have created this website demonstrates all the steps and handmovements! I have already spent 3 hours practicing today (after 15 years!!) because I enjoyed it so much!!!
I am trying to re-teach myself the Alarippu dance. I remember most of it but I have difficulties getting the last fast part of the dance right. I was wondering if you could demonstrate the steps for the Alarippu?
Thank you so much for this website!!!
Regards,
Nisha
Wow, Nisha thats great !!! This show your interest. Hey Nisha, thank you so much for those encouraging words. Actually I have not yet thought about putting in dance items as online lessons. Not sure how that will work out. As of now I am concentrating on gestures and adavus. But yes I shall look into your request closely. Thanks again.
Hi Anjali! I have just completed all your videos and realized that most of the fast part of the Alarippu are the TattiMetti Adavu steps which you have demonstrated. So this is very helpful. I hope you carry on adding more videos so I can practice at home until I find a guru in London. Thank you so much again for this website!!! You really have done an amazing job with this. Many thanks!
Regards,
Nisha
Hi Anjali,
Thanks for putting this blog and your great videos online! It helps me learn a lot!
I wanted to ask you which of the DVDs on adavus you would recommend – there are 4 different DVDs on http://www.jayq.org , and I am wondering if you have watched any of them.
Thanks!!!!!!!
Regards,
Sumathi
Hi Sumathi. Thank you. Yes It is “Bharatanatyam adavus-the depth and diversity”. It explains the steps clearly, shows a few variations in three speeds. Also the dancers have perfect body language and expressions. Also the Cd “Bharatanatyam- percepts and practice” is good for hastas and bhedas. Others I have not gone through.
Hi Anjali,
I realize you are a great dancer.
I have a great love for Bharathanatiyam .My 6 year old daughter is learning Bharatanatyam . May I know which song will be best for children for stage performance.
If will help if you can suggest me a few songs good for Bharatanatyam and easy for children.
Hi Anjali,
You’re indeed doing a wonderful job by promoting Bharatanatyam. I wanted to ask your opinion about teaching the dance to my daughter who’s just turned 3 years old. Is it too early to start? And if not, could you recommend any school near Reading, Berkshire which might be teaching this beautiful artform?
Thanks a lot!
regards,
Monika
Thanks Nivedita, for your encouragement. It would be better if you ask your daughters guru, because he/she will be the right person to select a song best suited for her depending on her dancing abilities.
Hi Monika, thanks a lot for your kind words. If your daughter enjoys the whole process then you can go ahead with it. Else cannot force her to do so. Otherwise the right age to begin is 6yrs and above.
Hi Anjali,
I am Chitra from Singapore. Today i stumble upon your page by chance. I have learnt dancing when i was young and have stopped it for the last 7 years due to circumstances as i was out of the country. But the passion is still there in my heart. I would love to dance again. I am 28 years old now and thinking whether it is too late to start all over again.. I even have the drean of someday doing my arangetram.. Kindly advise me…
Hi Anjali
I am truly impressed by your website and the service you do to all the students of Bharathanatyam world wide.
Please can you let me know of any good Jatiswaram videos. My daughter is doing it right now and I am keen that she watches some videos.
Hi, i’m christina. i’m 15yrs old. i really love dancing and i would love to learn Bharatanatyam. But i’m nervous about learning i feel like i’m too old to learn dancing now all my friends graduated from their bharatanatyam class. Anjali can you email me at asiancutie9310@yahoo.com if you have any suggestions for me? By the way i saw your classes on youtube you were amaaazzinnng:)

Thanks a lot for visiting. I believe it is the duty of every Indian to carry and preserve our rich culture. May be this blog has given me an opportunity to contribute in my own way.
Dear Sol
I am happy that you liked this design. Thanks.
Mumbai is a very vast city. If you could tell which part of Mumbai you will be residing (may the name of the place) I will be able to guide you. And certainly there are lot of Bharatanatyam teachers in mumbai. A well known school is the Nalanda institute of performing arts founded by Dr Kanak Rele.(a renowned Mohiniattom dancer.)
Dear Mrs. Anjali:
Thanks for the Bharatanatyam videos. We live in Detroit. My 6 year daughter Bavya is learning everyday from your videos. Instructions are very clear. May be you can release instructional DVDs.
Any way !!, Thanks for all the good work and making it available for us.

G8 work, but can u make the site more organised ,what I mean is the video clipings can be provided in a way how a student starts off with this great art. Also u can have a archieve of all the clippings in the order so that a lay person like me can about it.
Congrats on ur great effort and the dedication to the unparallel dance art.
Thanks a lot , I have got a answer for my questions from ur website itself. Thanks G8 wrk

Hi. I was wondering how does each dance in Bharatanatyam represent each God’s life in the Hindu culture?
Hi Rupa, thanks for visiting the site. Bharatanatyam began as a worship in temples by Devadasis. They usually sang and danced on songs and poetries in praise of gods. Thats how kautukams and kirtanams came in. Also there are lot of padams that narrate stories of the gods. It is largely based on Indian mythology.
Hello dear Anjali,
This is Sol again. I don’t know if you remember me, but asked if you had some information about some intensive course in Mumbai. I will be visiting India in 2 or 3 months and I’m trying to find some teacher. If not intensive at least I would like to take regular classes.
I’m very neophyte student. Just know a few adavus, but I have great enthusiasm to learn.
I will stay at Girgaon Chowpatty. Maybe some of your readers have some information too.
I feel a bit embarrassed for asking again. I guess you must be very busy.
Thank you again,
kind regards, Sol
Hi Sol,sorry for not having answered. I have mailed you with necessary details now.
Meanwhile if there are any readers who know about good classes around the area, please feel free to write and send us the information.
Namaste Anjali,
I’m translating diary of vaishnava saint Cintamani Devi to lithuanian and i’m looking everywhere for illustrations for my work. Could you help me? I’d like to ask you some beautiful pictures of bharatanatyam dance.
Dear Anjali, i like your entusiasm in teaching Bharatanatyam online very much
Radhe Radhe,
Best wishes, May Radhika bless you.
Namaste Baladev das ji
What kind of pictures do you want. Is it relating to any mudra or any deity etc. If You can specify may be I can help. and Thank you for you kind words
Namaste,
Dear Anjali, it’d be nice to find one illustration of ‘luxurious’ bharatanatyam performance, because that diary is about girl who was dancer and entertainer and suddenly became brahmacharini. In exchange I could give you some interesting food recipies. And I have one question, can I dance bharatanatyam? I’d like to dance only in presence of my home Deities. Thank you very much.
Radhe Shyam,
May Radhika bless you
Dear Mrs Anjali,
Thank you so much for creating this website. It’s great help as I practice this wonderful dance often at home, too. I’m from Europe and there’s only one Bharata Natyam teacher in my country; our other teacher from India comes twice per year. Our dance group practices on a regular basis but there’s so much more I’d like to learn about this wonderful dance form (and, luckily, there’s a lot of great info on this website – I really like your views on how to prepare for a stage show:)
I also have a question: How can I improve the balance in pirouettes/turnings – especially in the 3rd speed?
Looking forward to your reply.
Kind regards,
Sylvia
Dear Baldevdasji
There are a number of dance performances on the youtube. You should visit and you would get one. I have in my favorites added a few. Take look at them aswell.
Dancing before the god is a very noble thought and yes, you can learn this art too.
Dear Sylvia
Thanks a lot for your kind words. Its good to know that there are so many Bharatanatyam enthusiasts outside India. I wish you good luck and success ahead.
A step that is difficult practice it again and again with a positive belief that I will get it right. Start with a slow speed and as you progress try doing it faster.
Dear Mrs Anjali,
I’m very happy to have recieved your advice – thank you:) I shall practice such steps in this way. There’s another thing I’d really like to know about Bharatanatyam. So far, we have been learning various choreographies (Alarippu, Swarajati, Tillana, etc.). But is improvisation possible in this dance form, too? Many friends ask me and I don’t really know what to tell them. If it is possible, how many years experience (or what knowledge) is needed to improvise well?
Best regards,
Sylvia
Namaste,
I’ll try to learn more. Thank you for posting such educational videos. And one more question, i’m dancing with dhoti now, are there any special dhoti draping styles for dancing?
Best Wishes
Thank you, Anjali ji,
I’ve learnt Nata and Tata Adavus a bit from your videos
May Radharani bless you,
Radhe Radhe
Dear Baldevdasji
Traditionally bharatanatyam is danced in dhotis. If you are comfortable you can continue or can switch over to a pyjama.
Any improvisation must look decent and not just altering or cutting down the item. just take a look at these links on how allarippu is improvised.
1. http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=UJIISv6ZwWA
Allarippu can also be done on a song playing at the background and sollukettu being said simultaneously.
2. http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=_qWonFBGisM&feature=related
Hi Anjali,Very useful site for the readers. Very helpful. Please provide me the details of Sthayi, shathvika and other bhavas.
Ann, Thanks. I shall very soon put up some details on Bhavas. Meanwhile check out a the articles on Navarasa and Abhinaya part 3 for bhavas and satvika abhinaya.
hi anjali
i found this site to be such a great informative site. i m a student of bharatnatyam and have just begun learning it since the last 2 mths. when i do the leg movements, specialy in madhalya, i feel my heel gives me quite some pain, which makes me uncomfortable to do more practice. as such i dont have any heel problem. is it becoz i m putting too much pressure on my heels while doing it, coz even my arms start paining, and my teacher says i m keeping my arms too tightly stretched. well, maybe its becoz of less practice since its only 2 mths?
i love reading the information on ur blog, keep it up. i wud love to visit ur blog for more.
thanks!
sheetal
Dear Anjali,
it`s great that you show us how to dance Bharatanatyam! We live in Germany and we made a one-week-class with an indian dancer and now we continue to dance with your intenet-you-tube help.
Thanks a lot!
Varsana Rani and Draupadi
Hey Varsana and Draupadi I am glad you liked it. Thank you so much.
Hi, anjali… like your post… I am 30 and have just started learning the dance form!
It is beautiful… i was always enthralled by bharat natyam and never got an opportunity to learn… i gave up.. but i work for a school and told our dance teacher that i was interested… she immediately made me realize its never too late!!
I am enjoying this learning experience!!
I want to learn and read deeply the theory… can you suggest some good books…
Love
Sherryna
Sherryna, it is encouraging to know you liked the posts. Two good books that is a must read is the Abhinayadarpanam and the Natyashastra. There are lot of English translated versions available. Books by authors Manmoham gosh and P. Ramchandrashekar are good. I wish you good luck for your lessons ahead.
Gud work……i like this site as its very useful for all who would like to begin with. I appreciate your hard work that you put in this site. Keep going.
Please suggest me
I am male with age 30.Unmarried and leaving in Bangalore. I want to know if its feasible for me to start learning this now. And what is the process i need to follow and the time i need to dedicate if i want to consider my self that i learned considerable amount of this art in next 1 or 2 years….? …Thanks.
Hello Kiran, I am glad that you liked the contents here. Thank you. You can surely start learning now. If you only have a time of 1 or 2yrs, Then I think you must devote as much time as possible towards understanding the art. You can join dance institutes like kalakshetra, that offer 2-3 yrs full time course on Bharatanatyam. Good luck.
respected anjali madame
i am learning bharatanatyam and i really enjoy it
this information is really helpful and it is explained in a simple manner which is easy to understand and helps you more.
i hope that you continue updating your site.
i am grateful that you have introduced this unique way for learning.
thank you tejaswini
Tejaswini, with so much of encouragement from people like you, I am always inspired to do more. Thank you.
Hi Anjali,
I was student of Bharatiya sangeet samiti. I have cleared five cerificate exam of that. I am interested complete my course. Right now I am in canada( vancouver). I am going back to mumbai. Could you pls. guide to complete my course.
Thanks in Advance
Ashlesha, nice to know we are from the same school. I shall mail a phone number of a friend of mine in Thane. You can contact her when you reach Mumbai. Good luck!
Hi Anjali,
Thanks so much for your prompt response regarding knee pain in bharathanatyam. I have a question about abhinaya. I feel I am too shy to fully express myself in front of my teacher. But I feel really motivated to be expressive in front of the morror. I however do not acknowledge this to my teacher or anyone else because I feel they will then pay more attention to me when I am doing abhinaya
How do you overcome this shyness ? Thanks in advance again !
Dear Rekha, it is very important to forget yourself when dancing. Just assume the character you dance. Ignore anything around you. Instead of practicing before the mirror behind closed doors practice where your members at home can see you. They are the right people who can give you a true feedback. Their words may sound critical and funny sometimes, but if you can take in a right spirit you will overcome your fear.
Hi Anjali,
You are doing a wonderful job with this website. I have learnt Bharatnatyam for over 8 years in India and am teaching kids here in the Boston area. I came across your website when I was looking for information and pictures on Bharatnatyam to send to my niece who has just started learning in the DC area. I appreciate your patience and enthusiam to compile your knowledge and present it to the world so beautifully. Keep up the great job!
Hey Niveditha, thank you for that encouraging words. Feel free to share your opinion, ideas and experiences here.
Thanks Anjali.
I have learnt dance some many years ago. I want to retsart. I am a young at heartt and looks older person In my 40′s… I want to do it slowly.
I live in rural Arizona where there is no teacher.
Can you make some kind suggestions?
I am so pleased to see your website. Thanks a million. You are so lovely.
Panna.
hey panna, you can surely practice using videos. Initially start with namaskara followed by tatta adavu. I shall soon be starting an online coaching and shall mail you with the details soon.
Hi Anjali!
Nice name! I was just browsing some bharatanatyam dance steps on Youtube. Fortunately! I found your online classes. Im so greatful. I was learning bharatanatyam in my childhood days. In fact, I love & respect bharatanatyam hearty. But could’nt continue classes for certain reasons. Im glad that I found your videos, now i can pratice all the steps & learn more from You at home itself. Once again I would love to thank you so much and wont forget to wish you Happy Diwali !

Warm regards,
Neha Gokarn
Hi Anjali.I am a 20 yr-old girl. When i was in my 4 th grade though i had learnt a bit of this art but for just a month. But i always had this passion for learning.I am sure of re-starting it all over again.I have one question for you though.I heard Bharatnatayam helps bring grace to our basic movements like walking and facial expressions? Is it true? Also i would like to truly appreciate and all the more thank you this blog of yours. Please answer my question and do keep posting more such mudras.
Regards.
Thank you Neha and Pratusha. Wish you all a very happy Diwali. Pratusha the answer to your question is ‘Yes’.
thanks a lot for replying ot my query Anjali ma’am..one more question though..I live in thane. Is there any way you would know and suggest any dance class out here?I would be obliged if you know.
Regards.
Well Pratyusha, in thane there are couple of experienced dance teachers. Those known to me are Rakhi chikte- 98969196979 who has her classes in Naupada. Uday kumar (uday386@rediffmail.com ) has his classes in Brahmand complex and Rutu enclave on Ghodbunder road.
Hello Anjali,
I just wanted to tell you how much I love this website. I have always been a great admirer of Bharatanatyam and have wanted to study this great art form. Unfortunately due to various reasons, it has remained an unfulfilled wish. A month ago, I came across your site and since then, I have been studiously following your videos and memorizing steps. I can’t express the happiness I feel when I realise that I am finally able to learn something of this divine art. I am looking forward to the day when I will be able to start learning formally under a Guru, but your videos and blog are definitely a great asset in helping me undertsand the basics of Bharatanatyam.
Right now, I am practicing the Visharu Adavu and am eagerly looking forward to more videos. Since I am not used to dancing much, my legs ache a lot, but I don’t care really; I feel so happy that I am finally able to learn!
Thanks a lot for all the effort that you take in educating people like me and may God bless you!!!!
Hey Ampili, I am glad that you are able to learn from the videos. Things will fall in place for the dedicated and the passionate. Good luck and thank you.

hi anjali
m very thankful for u creat this blog. as i am in riyadh cant learn bharatnatyam here but now as i found ur blog it seem easy for me. i think bharatnatyam is course of up to 7 years. can u pls explain here which adavu and which hand mudra belongs to which year. i mean which steps r for which year. it will be easy .
and other thing about hand mudra can u post picture of every mudra with its name.
again i am very thankful to u. u r great.
I have been healed by this beautiful dance.
I have a cronic pain condition and this dnace helps me strech every day and I feel strong and gracegul and beautiful for once. It is a lovely thing and I hope to study it it Tamil Nadu next summer. Thanks so much for providing great refreshers!
Hi Bridget, happy to know your experiences with the art form. I wish you good luck for your lessons. Thank you.
Thanks for showing us. Please let me know if you perform in Florida.
Hi Anjali,
i have completed my nritya visharad in bharatnatyam….but i am confused whether to perform arangetam since i have finished my nritya visharad………….plz help me……..
Arangetram is said to be the first ever performance given by a student with the consent and the support the guru. Your guru should tell you if you are ready. It is one of the best opportunities you have to project your talent. Also one need not spend too much on arangetrams. It can be very simple. . Is your confusion on these lines?

Hi Anjali
Sorry for the delayed response.
I deeply ask for your apologies if you feel that my website is a true copy of yours.Actually, my intention is not to copy anybody’s website for my own benefit.
My true intention is to bring all bharanatyam artists/groups/dancers/Bharatanatyam Schools/academies in to one network.
In the near future, I am planning to add blog, so that users may publish their respective program mes/views on bharatanatyam on to my blog.
I will definitely invite all known bharatanatyam celebrities(including you) to add their remarks/articles to my blog.
Basic purpose of my website is to spread the oldest cultural dance form worldwide.
Once again, my apologies if you got hurt by my copying some of the contents from your website.

Shiva
Hi Anjali,
If you wish, may we exchange our respective website links to be posted on each others website.

Hi Nalini
I can understand. See your daughter is just 4yrs, she has a long way to go. Right now you just need to support and encourage her. Trust her guru and give her all your cooperation. As your child gets older she will discover her own niche and let you know what she wants. Lets hope for the best.
HI cheryl,
Thanks for your support. Yes I hope I am able to do all that you have mentioned.
Hi anjili
When I was 10 years , I learnt bharatnatyam two years and stopped. Now I am 40 years. we are living in Canada, but we live far away to Edmonton. Vijaya
Very good attempt. I am daughter and disciple of Late Swamimalai K. Rajarathnam Pillai Bharathanatyam Guru for Frontline dancers like Malavika Sarukkai, Priyadharshini Govind, Srinidhi Chidhambaram etc. I found this site really useful to suggest for my students. Please keep in touch.
Hey Vijayaji
I guess your grand daughter is really lucky to have an active granny like you. I have heard of Raa ra venugopala song in some kuchipudi dances. let you know when I find it. Allarippu and jastiswaram Cd’s are available in sites like Kalakendra.com. Though I have not personally bought them. Good luck .
Hey Jayakamalaji it feels nice to be encouraged by Gurus like you. I am glad you liked it. Thank you.
Hi Anjali,
This is a great website and I appreciate the hard work you put in this. I am a teacher myself and this website helps me in providing my students with more information that I did not learn as a student. Please keep sending such information like the other various hastas. Thanks very much.
Regards,
Sandhya.
Hello Sandhya, thanks. It feels nice when dancers themselves appreciate the work. Keep adding in your thoughts, comments and suggestions for our readers.
Hello Madam,

Anjali,
Your efforts in promoting Bharatnatyam is incredible. I never thought that I could google for information on such a subject till a friend told me. I do not have words to express my feeling towards your kind work on this subject.
My daughter is learning Bharatnatyam from a very good teacher in gurgaon for last three years. Till now we could not help her learning at home. But you have just made this possible.
Thanks a lot & keep up the good work.
Nirmal
Hi Sreelatha
Thanks for visiting the site. I am not very clear of what you want. There are a number of Varnams. Any specific song that you are looking for?
Hi Nirmal
Thanks a lot for the encouragement. I am happy that this site is helping parents to guide their children. I wish all success to your daughter. Thanks again.
Namaste!

of course i hope that this person would like the music i can share. (i have quite large collection in different styles)
so my msn adress is kaivva@yahoo.com

Hi Anjali
I just started learning Bharatanatyam. I am 29. My teacher said there were different styles in this. She is teaching in Tanjore style. After seeing your site, I am seeing these movements also. I have a question to you, The videos posted by you are in which style? I tried to look in this site, couldnt find it. Can you please let me know. I look forward your answer. Thanks
Hi Sangeetha
This is the pandanalur Style.
Thanks for the class. I am taking class now. I saw one site selling all adavus in DVD. I was thinking about ordering one.
I saw your adavu’s in you tube.
I am intersted in online course.
Hi Anjali,
My daughter is 4 and a half years old and I am very keen that she learn bharatanatyam. I had started learning when I was a child but could not continue since my father had a transferable job. Though we are from Kerala, we are currently living in Gurgaon. I came across your website while searching the net for a good teacher. Its very impressive what you have done with your knowledge and passion for this dance form. I would like to ask whether you know of any good Bharatanatyam teachers in Gurgaon. Thanks, Sandhya
HI Anjali,
I have written to you a couple of times in the past and I really appreciate your prompt answers and suggestions. I have a question about becoming a professional / performing artist. I am 30 years old and already have an established career in software. I have always felt very passionate about bharathanatyam and would like to pursue this at a professional / performing artist level. I am currently learning a varnam with a very good teacher in the US. I will be doing my arengetram in 1 year. My question is how do I improve myself from that point. Should I go to India on a regular basis and learn from famous gurus (in addition to learning advanced pieces and nattuvangam from my teacher here). I am planning on cutting down my hours at my present job as a software engineer so that I can pursue dance at this level. Dance is my passion and I really want to achieve my goal of pursuing this at a professional level. I will gladly dedicate 7-8 hours a day dancing or being involved in dance. Kindly advise how I should go about improving my skills in dance once I complete my arengetram. Thanks much in advance.
Hi Rekha, nice to know about you. I wish you all the best and good luck with your decision. You tend to mature as an artist when you keep performing. Perform where ever you get an opportunity. Initially you might have to give some free performances. Join the dance groups of experts.I have started realizing that the learning process never ends. As we progress ahead in arts its our contribution to the the field that matter. It could be in terms of your choreography or creating an repertoire of your own. It is much in terms of inner realization than with reference to external perfection. It is some kind of discovery that happens. Probably doing a Ph.D could help dig deeper as you could be doing your own research. I am sure your guru can guide you better.
Hi Anjali,
Really it is very much usefull website to learn dance,it helps me more to learn from this.Plz can u provide Allaripu and all junior protion online, this will help us more to learn dance.

Hi ,Anjali ,
My daughter , Dhwani , is 13 yrs old and is learning Bharatnatyam since she was 4 yrs of age. She completed her Arangetram last year in June and is currently doing her Volume 2. She has been learning the Kalashetra style . She has also been giving her Gandharva exams .She is very keen on her dance and wishes to complete all five volumes. Her Guru was Shalini Sharma a disiple of Guru Ravi Sharma. She is currently doing Volume 2 with Guru Ravi Sharma. But being in a city like Mumbai and with today’s culture , things are getting more commercialised. I really wish that she has a better Guru in future and if possible a private Guru. Can you give any references specially since you have doen your courses from Mumbai . Also I understand Hema Malini does not have any dancing school in Mumbai , but due to your experience with her , can you guide if she has any schools or private classes where she teaches or her senior student steach Bharatnatyam under her guidence. Thanking you .

Lover of Bharatanatyam
Namaskar Anjali!
I am an African Drummer who turned Latin Drummer and then Latin Dancer. I have been teaching Yoga since I was a teen. Now in my adult life, I have found my way to this glorious expression of devotion and myth through dance. Though challenged by it, I love the beauty and practice. I thank you for your site and the information here as I am not able to be with my teacher every week. You are most informative and your love for Bharatnatyam fills me with the motivation to practice!
Really good job Anjali!!Came across one of your videos in youtube…Goodluck.
Hello Avani,
Good to know about your daughter who have been learning dance for quite some time. I would suggest not to change teachers if she is able to learn and give exams. As you know Hemaji does not have any classes. But her students do have their own dance schools in Thane and Dahisar.
Hello Lalitha,
This is the order of styles. Tanjaore – Pandanallor – Kalakshetra – Adyar. Tanjaore is the ancient and propagated by the Tanjaore quartets. The contributions of their student Meenakshi sundaram pillai from pandanallor, a great natuvanar, came too be know as Pandanallor bani. Rukmini Devi a disciple to Meenakshi Sundaram pillai founded the Kalakshetra style. And finally Adyar lakshman an alumini of kalakshetra. His students call it as the Adyar Style.
Hello Divya,
God bless you and wish you all the best. thank you.
Hello Sonali,
Good to know you are a dancer too. I am in Arkansas, US. I only provide online one to one sessions currently. Thanks

Im very curious about your interest to russian.
Thak you for information and videous.
Hello Maria, Thank you. I am glad you found the site helpful. I am greatfull to Nina, one of our readers from russia who is helping me with the Russian translation.
Anjali,
I have found some news from Hema Malini which might be of interest:
http://www.mangalorean.com/news.php?newstype=local&newsid=113695
quote
“I love dancing and I can’t live without it. For this I do at least two-three shows in a month and for each show I’m on the stage for minimum two hours. Each show requires rigorous rehearsals. So that’s how I remain fit,” “Apart from that I also do yoga and some exercises. You have to live a different kind of life; you have to sacrifice a lot of things. You cannot have things like tikki, jalebi and so on; you can see them but not eat them,”
end of quote
Next time can you add the bhedas too i learn bharatnatyam and i am a bit confused with the bhedas a nd please do this as soon as you can because it is my grade 1 exam in a few days
P.S. Please please add the bhedas ( with the pictures)
Thanyou to you Anjali (chechi i don’t know how to call you)

P.S. Thank You and provide us the pages of BHEDAS too!!!!
Hello Crissy, Thank you. Stay tuned and I shall posting the Bhedas gradually and as soon as I can.
Hi anjali,
Great work. Very informative.
Thanks.
Hi Anjali,
Vey informative website.
Is there any adavu called “Korvai Adavu”?
Thanks
Jayanthi
today is Women’s Day. I congratulate you, Anjali. Be always as beautiful, graceful, and kind as you are now. Thank u for this site
My best wishes to you!!!
Hey Jai
Thank you Jayanthi. Korvai’s are the combination of different adavus put together. In other words it is the stringing of various steps to form a sequence. So Korvai adavus may have steps form different adavus blended together. We can say that a jati is a combination of different korvais ending with a Teermanam.
Hi Ksenia,
Thank you for your greetings. Wish you the same and God bless you !
Anjali,
I am interested in getting some more info on your dance classes. Do you have any DVDs with all of your classes together?
Dear Anjali,
Im a MCA graduate.Ive been learning dance for the past one year. And, i had the burning desire to learn dance, from my childhood. But unfortunately, dint had proper guru. Im much impressed by this blog, and the way u respond, and the documentation of ur site, its really inspiring. Your dedication, simplicity, and interest is great. I would like to know more about Mandi Adavu. And by the way, will it be difficult for me to progress in natyam, as im grown-up, and my muscles became tight.. Of course, it was relatively bit tougher for me to learn till now. But, i managed to progress. And, now really struck with this Mandi Adavu. But i definitely dont want to give up. Well, waiting for ur response.. Thanks alot.. Keep going..
Hi Preeya
I have mailed you some info on my online classes. I shall be soon coming out with my DVD’s. Shall let you know then. Thanks.
Hello Siva Shankari
Good to know about you and your passion for bBharatanatyam. I am aware that mandi adavus are slightly difficult for adult students like you. But keep practicing and do not struggle or get stuck with this adavu much. There is a lot more beyond mandi adavus you can learn and do in natyam. Dancing in itself is a good exercise. With practice you will be at ease with it. Enjoy your journey
dear anjali,
My 7 yr old daughter started her first class in Bharat natyam yesterday and i was just googling to have some infm..
You have done great job and all the best in life.
As its said, knowledge is to spread and not to keep it to yourself.
God bless,
usha
Thank you Uma. I wish all the best to your daughter. And God bless you too.
Nice videos Anjali. I was on google for lookout for Bharatnatyam teacher, for my daughter who is in 7th grade in Saudi arabia (Dhahran). It was then I came up on ur site. I think till we get a teacher( if we are lucky), she can refresh her steps from the videos. You have done a awesome job. Keep up your work. Incase, you have any contact info for any teachers through ur network, please email me at rajasreesanjay@hotmail.com.
Hi Anjali I’ve been a bharatanatyam dancer for 7 years now and I’ve seen you dance before an you do a wonderful job! I was in Little Rock last week but now i’m back in Tamil Nadu India for a bharatanatyam performance.I’ve been learning kuchipudi too and it’s very hard to do.I hope I’ll see you someday in india!
Shreya Sumudralwar
Hello Raji
Thank you for the encouragement. I shall mail with some details soon.
Hello Shreya
Glad that you liked the site. All the more happy be encouraged by a dancer. I have learnt Mohiniattom for some years, but never got the opportunity to learn Kuchipudi. What a coincidence you were in little rock and we never met. I wish you all the best with your performances and Kuchipudi lessons. Will be in touch and would love to see you perform. Thank you.

Mahesh, thank you. I shall keep updating this site. Many learning Cd’s are available these days. Check with kalakendra.com
hi anjali
i love ur dance
i admire u r dance
but u r not answered my question.
iam 25 . i dont know little bit of dance.
can i learn it with in one year
Siri, Thank you. Sent you a mail yesterday regarding your inquiry for online classes. You will not be able to learn entire repertoire of bharatanatyam in a year. But definitely you could complete the basic steps (Adavus) and one or two innovatory dance pieces. There is no age bar to learn something you love. History talks about great dancer Rukmini devi who started learning in her early 30′s. You are still young.
Hi Anjali,
I am 19 years old and I would like to learn bharatanatyam. Do you think it’s too late? I really don’t have much dance experience. Also it’s intimidating to be in a class with students much younger and more experienced than me, but I am really interested and excited at the prospect of learning. I viewed some of your youtube videos, and they’re just getting me more energized to do this. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and videos!
just to let know of a new service called similar, maybe you know already? In case not here is link
http://bharathamonline.com
Hi Anjali,
Kudos on your passion and service. Great website.
My daughter learns Barathanatyam and we are having a little argument on the 2 mudras for ‘sadness’ and ‘being scared’. Which mudras are generally used for these two emotions.
Hello Dee, Thanks. There ‘n’ number of ways to denote bhava-Bhaya (sadness and fears). Few gestures that can be used in this context are Mrigashirsha, Pataka, Dola, Pasha.
Hi Anjali,
Like you, I have learnt Bharatnatyam from Madhuri Tai (Smt Madhuri KElkar, from kalyan, Maharashtra) tto. I did my Arangetaram under her guidance and under the guidance of her Guru, Shree Santhanamjee.
However I havent been able to stay in touch with this art form for the past 10 years. I am planning to revive it in me.
Any advice?
Cheers
–
Nandini
I am sure that having learnt under madhuri teacher, you may not have forgotten the basic adavus and the allarippu, kautukams and similar small items. What you would need is jatiswaram, tillana, padam, shabdams etc. I would recommend you to refer some cd’s and probably start learning by yourself. You could easily do that.
Thanks for the tips. Just that Madhuri Tai was enough a motivation for me to rehearse. Now I kindof have never found a reason to touch the ghungroos…But planning to start now.
Please do stay in touch.
Cheers
Hello Anjali!
I am a budding Bharatanatyam artist and my goals are to open up a new Baratanatyam school in NJ. Your website has refreshed and summarized all the years of arduous note-taking in from dance class years ago. I thank you for taking your time and helping others out in this wonderful art! This website truly shows your dedication to Bharatanatyam and your humbleness by sharing your knowledge with others. I really look up to you. Take care, keep it up and what an amazing website!
Best of luck in everything you do,
Gayathri
Hi Anjali,
I glad to know your online site with so detailed explaination in step with pics and videos. its very clear to understand and help to every body who is keen to learn detailed. I am also a student of Kalamandalam Sreejaya in Bangalore.
Please can you also include bharatanatyam songs used in arangetram, with the lyrics. which will be very use for learner like me to understand better.
Regards,
Sangeetha

hai Anjali,
i’m very much intrested in learning this classic art. I know some basics like Tattadavu, Kattadavu etc, but never really got hold on further. I need your advice to how to go about from this point. Should i find a guru or is it fine with online lessons?
Hello Shikha,
Glad that this site is helping you. I have sent you mail asking a few details. will let you know about the classes then.
Hello Pratima,
I would say it works just like the regular classes. We meet online and the classes are held. I shall mail you with the details soon. Please fill up the form by visiting this link http://onlinebharatanatyam.com/online-classes/
This is a really good site as i wanted to brush up my memory of bharathanatyam. i learnt bharathanatyam close to 12 years, completed my senior and then caught up with my education, as well i do not have any song recordings with me so could not even practice. So this site is a real help to me . i just had to go through once and i could remember everything .Thanks once again.
Hi Anjali,
Its a request if you can upload any one of your performance… Like any dance item on Krishana or Lord Ganesha.
Its a request.
Tahnks
Soumya
Very soon I shall do it. Thanks
my daughter is learning bharathanatyam. she has completed her steps and just started dance. she cannot do that eye thing properly. and i think she is not that interested in dance or she cant follow it. i love dance. how can i make her interested. the the teacher has lot of students and is not getting personal attenbtion.
Neeta, She is a beginner. It will take time for her to be expressive. Probably when she starts learning the Abhinaya pieces, her teacher will teach them the eye techniques. Lot is based on your daughter’s interest and observation. She will only get better as she progresses.
thank u .
u’r decision is good. i learn bharathanatyam to tis website. one sec more thank u..

How long does it take to learn bharathanatyam…
Thank u
hello.really liked the information you have provided.iam 20 years old.i have been learning bharathanatyam for 1 and a half years now.my guru teaches dance in her house.i want to know how long will it take for a person to do her arangetram?will a person be known as a dancer only if she does her arangetram?how can i find out if my guru can take me a long way in bharathanatyam?
Hello vaishnavi,
Our progress in dance largely depends on our passion and interest for the art form. A good teacher can show you the path, you have to walk the way. You must trust your guru with full faith. Rest will follow.
Regarding the arangetram, it depend on the student or how soon he/she gains angashuddi. Then the teacher decides.
Hi Ma’m,
I am Ammu. I’ve studied Bharatanatyam for 8 yrs. But unfortunately, i couldn’t complete it. I couldn’t continue the dance with only one Guru. I learned it from 4 different teachers & got different styles of bharatanatyam. Now I don’t have touch with the classic at all. I just do cinematic dances now. I want to continue my studies on bharatanatyam… I hope your website will help me. Your style is entirely different from mine but would like to catch yours. I am 19 yrs old. I’m afraid if it’s too late to learn the bharatanatyam. I would be pleased if I can get the video for Alarippu, shabdam, pushpanjali, jathiswaram & varnam. Thank you and all the best for your future.. God Bless You.
Hey Anjali,
I wrote earlier and still waiting for ur response.. Is there a website to look at good arangetram dances…
what is the order in which arangetram is done…and how many hours is that?
God bless you for all ur work.. I am ur fan….in youtube.com
Madam, I find your webpage as one of the very few active sites of Bharatanatyam. I am looking for good quotes on Bharatanatyam or classical dances. Can you help? Thanks in advance.

Gauri
Hello, nice to meet you. We are interested in indian classical dances . may be you have disk DVD with your class. can we buy this disk and resive it by post.
Hey Gauri, thank you. I shall get back to you with some details soon.
I appreciate your ardent wish to use the ‘SKY’ (the web) as the limit for Barathanatyam (so far left out) fittingly to pay obience
to the Great COSMIC DANCER LORD NATARAJA. I agree guru-sishya is important to learn flawless work, but i’m sure your
great attempt will deiinitely help the sishyas to practice at home,
since the classes arenot affordable on dailly basis nor the Guru is free to teach daily.
May the Lord NATARAJA bless you and your site to grow and prosper.
Srinivasan
Hello Mr Srinivasan, your words will always keep me motivated. Glad you liked it. God bless !! Thanks.

hello anjali , i am bindu rao . i did my vidwat in karnataka. now i am teaching in kolhapur (maharastra) , , it is difficult to give notes in hindhi or marati for exams do you know any books related to bharatanatyam in hindhi or marati . bye bindu
Nelda,
There is no specific rules in case of giving gifts for arangetram. A jewelery box or a make up set is a good match for the occasion.
Radha,
Where are you located? I provide online personal lessons to people like you who do not have easy access to teachers. I shall mail you the details soon.
Bindu,
I have personally not referred a hindi or marathi book. I am sure there are options. will get back to you. Also try contacting giri trading who keeps a good stock of books on Bharatanatyam.
I like bharatanatyam very much
very beautiful..
in fact i do think you should be an expert coz you have had the opportunity to perform at so many stages..
Thanks Arun, though I teach and perform, I am learning a lot in the process. A continuous learning process…
Can u please email me the details of ur online lessons thank u
I want 2 join it

oh sorry about that my friend posted it 4 me…thanku.
i didn’t get the email..): can u try sending on this address please…
Dear Anjali,
You are doing a fantastic work. Your contribution to the art world cannot be described in words. I am a carnatic classical singer. I have learnt music for close to 5 years. But I was interested in learning dance too, but couldn’t pursue during my early days. I have started learning bharatnatyam from your Youtube videos. I am 25 now, currently in UK, so do you think it is a bit too late for me to start? Please do reply as I want to know your precious feedback.
Thanks,
Anjali
Thanks Sowmya. Glad to know you are able to learn from the videos. You can very well start learning dance now. I have women much older than you who learn from me and they are doing very well. Please go ahead and take your lessons.
Hello Anjali,
I am a trained Bharata Natyam dancer myself with a formal training of 9 years now. I have also acquired a “Nritya Visharad” from Bharatiya Sangeet Samiti (Mumbai).
Currently I am settled in Bhavnagar and here I have found a guru for myself and now I am preparing for “Arangetram”
Since “margam” will go on for a year now I was wondering if you cold give me some tips on how to build up stamina for my first stage performance!
Thnaks
Practice..practice and practice is the best way to improve your stamina. You need not do anything else for building stamina. Eat good food and keep yourself hydrated after every session.
Can i get more details too ??
I have already posted a mail to you.I wish to leanr bharatnatyam from the point of view of giving exams and to be a knowledgable dancer in this art.I have learnt it for few months when i was 12 but have not much traces left in my mind
.I am in US,illinois right now.I am 26 years old.I wanted to know is it a bit late to start this training?I also wanted to know ow does this online training works?

Hi Anjali..
This is balaji, architect working in Bahrain (Middle east). Am such a passionate lover of indian classical art forms. Bharathanatyam is my strong passion since childhood to this date. Unfortunately, without proper backing i cudn’t learn it at all. Now, i staying in bahrain with tight schedules, am not finding enough time or right place to learn from. I had always been looking over the internet to find a site which could guide me through basic concepts and steps which i cud atleast manage to know from home. Yours is such a great site i came across which really has helped me a lot. Still i feel the lack of a guiding Guru, which i hope to find soon after getting back to India. I would like to know whether there is any specific variation in style performed by male performers or can i just follow your videos in the exact way you do it? In many of the shows i hv noticed gents performing in a sturdy fashion whereas ladies do it more gracefully.. so the doubt arises.. I kindly request you to guide me on this issue.. I really wish this site keep going very successfully.
Thank you Balaji for your wishes. I wish you find a good teacher for yourself soon. Naturally men have more Tandavam (stronger movements) than lasyam(soft). It is always advisable for male dancers not to perform the lasyam way (except for certain characters in kathakali and kuchipudi). Good male dancers are not feminine yet have graceful movements. Male students are advised not to dance effeminately by their teachers. In case of my videos there will be slight changes in if you are referring it. These videos are only reference in case you are learning it or need to revise them. I offer online lessons for those who have been following my videos, that way they get their corrections and finishing touches during the session.
Hello Anjali , I enjoy viewing your video clips that you provide that is very informative but, i wanted to ask if you could provide more close ups as far as the leg movements .i also would like to recommend that you use more of the bare floor instead of the carpet while you film these basic movements. Regards,Mesak
Which is better dance to learn Bharat natyam or Kathak and what is the diference between this two?
Thank you Mesak.
Hi Ranjan, Both the dance styles have their unique features. It is impossible to identify one as a better form. A few difference are prominent in the Music, the dressing, and the movements. BH is based on the carnatic classical while Kh has the hindustani classical. Bh movements are performed often in the Half sitting postures, whereas the Kh is performed in the samapada (standing) positions. Please watch some videos of both styles and you will clearly see the differences. It all depends on which style appeals to you the most.
@assumtha bernadina: assuming ur Xtian ? u might find some of classical-like bhajan/ dance on Kisho Geos video page, or else tamil Angel TV, Kerala Shalom TV or Divine Vision TV send some occasionally (google)
http://www.kishogeo.com/
Namaskaram,
Am very impressed by your immediate response for my query posted yesterday. Thanks a million. Learning this graceful art of bharatanatyam (Even interested in other forms of dances) has been my dream since childhood. Dance is very close to my heart. Am 25 now and somehow i couldnt manage to learn till this age. I have classical training in flute for 4 years. I have a lot of confidence that i can pick up well with the help of some Guru like you. I have applied for the details of your online classes. Expecting the details from you. But am really concerned about the time. I could manage to access the internet either at night (11 pm and above) or at early morning (5 am to 7 am) as we friends are sharing the connection. Morning is preferable as i can get a room free for practice here. One more clarification please. Will it be possible for me to pick up the dance with a grace of men under the guidance of a lady Guru? Thanks for your concern. Waiting for the reply. My hearty wishes for all your efforts through this blog and one to one sessions.
Hello Balaji, I have mailed you with the details.
Thanks for the information you’ve given. I started doing bharatnatyam when i was 10 years old but it was on and off lessons. i didnt keep it up. i was still too young to decide if i want to do it or not but when i turned 14, i made up my mind that i’d do and thus started certificate one in Mauritius (where i’m from) but unfortunately i feel sick and really couldnt dance for alteast 1 whole year. i tried to start all over again but my parents decided to move to Australia and here i am 16 years old now, still interested in doing it but they dont have any classes here. i’d really love if online classes could help me.
do u think that’ll help me?
Cheers,
Yashna
Hello Yashana, thanks for letting us know about you. I have mailed you with the details. Looking forward to hear from you.
Hi Anjali,
Thanks so much for leaving a kind remark on my blog. It made my day. You have done a remarkable job in building this online school for Bharatnatyam. I often come here to get the sollukettu or the steps to the Adavus right. I am learning Kalakshetra style and I guess it is a little different than how you are teaching here but that doesnt really matter. Its great to learn the differences as well….thanks for your time and effort in doing this
Hi
such a great site with lots of infos. Thanks a lot. My daughter(age 7) is learning Bharatham in Toronto, Canada. Could u please give me some infos about Nanthikeshwarar Sthuthy, which she needs for her grade 2 exams? Thanks.
Hi mam,
I wanted to join your dance group.
Please guide.
Regards,
Rajeshwari Sharma
Excellent work! I learnt Bharatanatyam from age 4 to 12 and left abruptly but after watching a performance recently, I am inspired to restart learning/training again at 26 years of age. I may not be able to do my arangetram, but this time around I will be learning for learning’s sake and for the love of this dance form
Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thanks for the informations that you’ve given.. I’d studied the Classical dance for 10 years, and due to some reasons i couldn’t continue it.. Now i’m married and settled in Mumbai.. Here i got an opportunity to teach Classical dance. Actually i was searching through the internet for my refreshment, at that time i found you.. Wow !! you did a very good work Anjali.. My sincere thanks to you, for reminding me all the basic adavus and the theories…
Though i’m new to this teaching profession, i need some tips from your side.. Can you suggest me sessions for each class ?? I’m planning to take 3 classes in aweek for 1 hour.. How many portions that can i cover in 1 session ?? Whether i need to teach my students the detailed version of theories or can i start directly to the adavus etc etc.. I’ll be very grateful if you send a reply to me either through mail or through this..
Thanking You..
Cinna
Hey Chinna, you can start off with the Namaskaram and basic steps. you can cover two or three steps in a class. Since the class progress is based on the pace of the entire group. Initially practical lessons are interesting. Later get started with gestures and Navarasa which kids enjoy a lot. Also get back to practice and keep yourself updated.
Hey Arthi, thanks.
Hello Rajeshwari, please fill up this form . I shall get back to you.
Hey Suhi, what I understand by a nadikeshwara stuti is a Shiva Stuti or a kautukam. It is a song in praise of Lord Shiva, or the Lord of Nandi.
Hii Anjali,
I am also bharatnatyam dancer, and took my training about 9 years in India.I live in USA now,and now want to open my bharatntaym dance academy.
I would really appericiate if you could be teach me some basic information beofre starting it.

Hi Anjali,
I’m very happy to see ur reply.. Whether i need to wait for all the 10 basic adavus( Tatta, natta, sutral, tattimetti, kudittametti etc..) to complete for starting an item or can i teach any simple item in between ??
Which should be first item that i’ve to teach them ?? Ganesh vandana, Kautuvam or any padam ??
I’ll be very happy if you complete that remaining Jati adavus soon.. Also i’m waitning for the mandi adavus
Luv,
Cinna

Dear Anjali
I have recently recolecting basic adavus in bharatnatyam which I learnt in school days . I have learnt almost 7 years this dance style..as I was obesrving your videos..I was continiously thinking that your perfection in movements is matching to my guru..and guess what !!!!!!!!!!!!! we have learnt from same teacher Madhuri kelkar…I am from kalyan where she used to conduct classes…due to poor economical situation she gave me and my sister some concession during that time and we could learn…she was a great teacher although I never seen her performing..do you have her any clip or recording ?..I reside in Zurich and I am conducting a group where we practice Folk dances in our capacity and I am also taking opportunity to practice bharatnatyam I have learnt……………………I am soooooooooooo happy to know that you are student of madhuritai…
bye kirtimalini gadre
Dear Kirtimalini, happy to know that you are madhuri tai’s student. Madhuri teacher was a perfectionist. I have never seen her perform as well. I would be glad if you could share her photos if you have them. Wishing you all the best with your work in Zurich.
Hi!
Thanks very much for all this useful information. I started Bharatanatyam in Paris, France a bit more than one month ago and your website is really great to help me practicing things I learn during my class. What an amazing amount of precious details. Thanks again.
I’m glad I found this site ^_^. I’ve just recently become interested in learning this dance form. Do you have any advice for practice of the hand gestures? Some of them feel awkward because my hands are unused to the movements, do you have any stretches that you would recommend?
Hi Anjalichechy

hi Anjali, i really like your attempt to help people learn the great art of bharatnatyam online. i have been searching for a guru since quite sumtime now, there is an ancient saying that when the student is ready, the guru will appear. well, lets see.
Hello Anjali,
I would like to know the lyrics of each steps for beginners. Can you guide me on this. Is there any books like vocal music books for beginners for dance? Please advise.
Thanks/Shankar
The syllables or the lyrics are given in the Index page under the audio section. Please check. Thank you.
Hi:
Can you please recommend me good bharatnatyam dance teachers or instituions in Mumbai? I have no clue regarding Mumbai, neither I have friends nor family there. But I will be moving to Mumbai in coming months. So can you please refer me some teachers/institution names? My duaghter has been learning Bharatanatyam for the past 4 years. Long story short, I am moving from USA to Mumbai. Appreciate your help!!! Thanks
Hi lakshmi,
Mumbai is pretty big. If you could specify which place you will be in I can help you.
i live in NZ, since we moved here i have struggled to get a good teacher for my daughters, they both learnt dance intermittently, now i am pleased to find out a suitable dance teacher who can teach online. i am looking forward to continuing their lessons. i am really thrilled.
Dear Anjai
Am happy to see ur blog and ur doing a great work.
I have learnt Bharatnatyam till jathies and this happened 15 years back. In between i was busy with studied and then job etc. Now i want to practice my dance what i learned. Ur dance videos gave me a good remembrance and i want to extend my thanks to u.
I looking for auido songs where i can download from online. Can u provied me vinayaka kouthuvam song since am planning to start with that. Once again thanks a lot.
Cheers
Kalyani
Dear kalyani. Thank you for the kind words. happy that you are able to practice. Check kalakendra’s option of Mp3 download where you will get vinayaka kautukam. There are a number of versions of vinayaka kautukam sung on Youtube. That will help.
Hi Anjali,
I have been dancing since I was 7 years old and am now 32 years old. I stopped dancing in between for some years and have lost some choreographies too. Could you send or add on utube dances like alaripu ( tishra and mishra)and jatishwaram and more dances please.
Also I’m presently based at Bangkok. Do let me know if you have any dance performances here. I would like to be a part of it. I have been dancing for a very long time and have a flair for it.
I’m just amazed and awestruck at your dedication and care in creating this wonderful website. I was learning Kalakshetra style of dance for many years and discontinued several years back due to lack of time (now I’m in my second year of college), and planning to continue again (hopefully!). You are such a beautiful dancer! Do you give performances (sorry my question mark key doesn’t work!)
Hello Anjali,
Your site is very helpful. Thanks for helping us aspiring dancers. I used to learn bharatanatyam when I was young for about 3 years. I am now 30 and haven’t kept in touch with dance. However, I am now trying to learning it again. I have just gotten to the thattadavus and the nattadavus. One thing I have noticed is my knee hurts quite a bit after practise – especially the 2 inch area immediately above the knee. Sitting in mulumandi is extremely painful. I am not sure if I am doing something wrong when practicing or if this is just starting pains that go away as I practice more. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.
-Srividya.
Dear Srividya, I guess its the pain that beginners have. Probably doing a suryanamaskar daily would be helpful. And start your practice with some simple warm up exercises. It must subside as you get used to it. check the forum here http://onlinebharatanatyam.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13
questioning balance? unbelieveable:

@sobiha, Do they mean you need to have some certification?
Dear Anjali,
I am so glad i ran into your website. It is an excellent contribution to all dance lovers.I myself had been trained in bharatnatyam for almost 10 yrs .Unfortunately i do not have the classical songs to practice bharatanatyam.iam currenlty residing in Texas. It was so refreshing to see your video tutorials.I was wondering if you could also do some dance video tutorials on Alaripu, thodayam ,Jathishwaram etc. I would be really grateful If you could do them too and also could you tell me where i could find audio for those classical dances like that of Alaripu, thodayam, jathishwaram, padam ,varnam ,Thillana etc
Thankyou so much and i wish you all the very best in this venture of spreading and educating the great jewel of indian arts – Bharatanatyam.
not a certification……i have a certificate from india that i have completed my bharathanatyam..but they were asking about grades if i complete 8 grades in canada i can become a teacher, but each grades take one year,so its a long period.
when can become bharathanatyam teacher for the students?
how many year it will take to become teacher?
@Zenitha, Thank you . I am in the process of making the videos further, so stay tuned. Try Kalakriya or kalakendra websites for audios and videos. This website managed by giri trading can also give you options to download songs http://www.addkiosk.in/
@sobiha, I am not aware of the canadian grade system. Post it on the forums, may be somebody can help you.
@Indra, when ever you feel you are confident to teach. As a teacher I am still learning, so learning never ends.
Hi Anjali,
Thanks for putting together such a wonderful website. The other websites that you have directed us to are also very useful, specially the “dancingforthegods.org” where I have also registered.
I have always wanted to learn Bharatanatyam but didn’t have an opportunity when I was younger. But like they say, better late than never !
I am trying to follow your lessons on youtube and teach myself.
Best,
Shilpa

Hi Anjali,
Thank you for offering all this information on the Internet.
I started learning Bharatnatyam when I was over 30 as well. From all the dance styles I have ever tried out I find Bharatanatyam the most fascinating. It has a positive effect on mind and mood. I might be depressed one morning going to class, but then I just dance a complicated adavu, and my mind focuses and my spirit is uplifted.
I was wondering if there are any resources about Bharatnatyam and neuroscience, because I never felt this effect so strongly in other (mostly Western) dance styles.
Another question I had was if you also teach dances like the Alarippu, Jathiswaram, Stotram etc.?
And last but not least, is there a dance school where I could learn Bharatnatyam in an intensive course from morning till evening for about a month or two? At the moment I’m living in the UK but am able to travel for the next 2 months…
With regards,
Daniela
you should also work on some more old devotional and spiritual of the great spiritual country THAT IS HINDUSTAN(INDIA). I have started to learn it. but i want more stuff. Many Many thanks for ur hard work, I really appreciate, Try to open anacdemy in Usa. I also live in usa, at connecticut.

Hi Anjali,
I learnt Bharatanatyam for over 10 years but could not do my arangetram. Its been 7 years since I left the dance form. I am based in Mumbai and want to start learning again. But considering I’ve done the entire course it might be a waste if I have to learn all over again. How would you advise me start again? Could you connect me with teachers in Mumbai who would be able to help me?
You are doing a great job, keep up the good work!!
Best,
Anita
Hi Mam,
I am Usha,
Really information you gave is very helpful for the learners…
Mam i have some question, when can we do arangetram?how many years it will take to go for arengetram?what are the dances to learn for arengetram?till now i learned allaripu, jathiswaram, thillana, pushpanjali and some devarnamas, still how many daneses i need to learn?….Waiting for your reply ..
@Daniela, I feel if your heart is into your action, peace and joy is the experience. Nice to know you have found your peace in dance. I do teach the intermediate and advanced dance pieces you have mentioned in the online classes I offer. But the blog moves gradually and will be updated. check this link http://www.bharatakalaanjali.org/ievents.html. If I get some more details I shall update it here.
@Anand, Thanks for the feedback.
@Anitha where in Mumbai are you, so that I can give some one close to your locality.
@Usha, Bharatantyam Arangetram repertoire (margam) consists of allarippu, jatiswaram, Shabdam, padam, varam and Tillana. It is said the dancer should aleast know more than one margam before arangetram. Your teacher is the right person to decide about your arangetram. Atleast 5 years of training is required. Usha learning never ends. It is a journey to enjoy and not a destination
Hi I want to know who will teach Kalakshetra style of bharatnatyam @ Dubai . I am 27yrs old. just came to UAE 2months back searching for a new job. please do comtact me.

Hi Anjali,
I am 36 years old and have just begun learning bharathnatyam for the past 2 months – I came across your website when i was searching online about the knee pain that is bothering me so much. I am not able to make out if this something normal and will subside as I continue practising or am I injuring my knees. My children are also practicing for the past 1 year they do not have any such problems. Looking forward for your advise. thanks
@Medha, I shall gradually add all the dances. Thank you
@Sneha, what information are you looking for?
@Lakshmi, Thank you.
@Prashanthi, Slight pain initially is normal, but if it is bothering you in your daily routine pls consult a doctor.
Is there an age limit to performing an arangetram?
@Sheela, No age limit, But the student must have had a training of atleast 4 to 5 yrs before an arangetram.
Hello Anjali,
Thank you so much for your lessons in Bharathnatyam. My daughter is 4.5 yrs. old and I just initiated her in this field. Since I am not a dancer myself, your site is my reference to make her practice at home what she learnt in the class.
I like the way your lessons are structured, your perfection and the humbleness with which you have described about yourself. I am also very glad that you are able to give so much back to the community. Keep up the good work.
Thanks and Regards,
Shobha

how much is the charge for online?
Hi
Could you advise me. I have been having pain in my knees and feet. What can you recommend? Also Does a dancer need to keep fit and what sought of exercises do you recommend.
regards
nazley
Hi
can i have the basic gestures for grade 1 dance
@ Nazley, Dancer needs exercise for warm before you begin dancing and flexibility exercises like splits and stretches. may be done with care and at a slow pace. For beginners there will be pain in the thigh, calf and feet, but if the pain persists for long and disturbs your routine, please see you doctor.
@ Meri, I have sent you a mail in this regards. Thank you for your interest.
@Priya, please check http://onlinebharatanatyam.com/2008/01/03/asamyukta-hasta-or-single-hand-gesture

in which i was very poor
Keeping an art form alive is a prayer in itself. You are going to be a virtual guru for several generations to come and all with selfless service…. God Bless!
@ Sharmela, The blog had brought me closer to this art form. It has no doubt helped me in learning and getting closer to want I wanted. And above all encouragement from wonderful people like you, whom I don’t even know. It feels great!! Thank you and God bless !!!!
i have learned dance for more than 8 years.I like to learn more about bharathanatyam. thanks srinidhi

HI Mam,
I am a classical dancer, but still learning ,i have one doubt
i like to do arengetram, can u plz tell me what are the dances we need to learn for arengetram?what is the first dance we shoud do for arengetram?can u give me the list plzzzzzz mam..
waiting for your reply.
@Swathi: A format of arangetram is as follows. Allarippu or Pushpanjali. Kautukam, Jatiswaram, Shabdam or padam, Varnam, Tillana, and finally a mangalam. But then its the choice of the teacher to decide how it should be.
Namasthe,
First of all, many thanks for giving insight about this great art form thru your web site. I am also a registered member now.
May I ask for a small help ?
I need to present a paper on any of the topics for about 7 minutes, and I wanted to choose the something on bharatanatyam, since I had learned this art form for almost 5 years.. The problem is to summarise this subject.. What would you suggest like which part would be easy and presentable for a 7 minutes session. Pls help ! Thanx a lot. Siraj
@Siraj Thanks. You can take up the topic of Abhinayam focusing on hasta abhinaya and Mukhabhinaya. Talk about how hand gestures convey meaning. later show them the navarasa and how they are interrelated.
Mam,
I’ve started leaning from your site..I want to know what type of Bharatnatyam I am learning from you..well, actually I don’t know much, but many people have asked me for this..
Thank you..
Varsha
Hi Priyanka,
Do you recommend any CD’s for beginners.
I want 2 learn dis classical dance form.
thanx.
Hi Anjali,
My name is Bhavana. I live in bangalore and i am learning bharathnatyam from past 15 yrs nw. But in between i had a break for about 8 yrs since i had to go abroad. But now im back and i have taken Bharathnatyam as a profession.
I have recently started dance classes. I am also learning further to do my senior exams. But that is not enough. Can you suggest me what else i can do to improve my knowledge in dance? I want to live in dance. Im very much interested but do not know how to approach and move forward. Can you suggest me few tips?
Thank you and will be waiting for your reply.
@Priyanka, CD’s of priyadarshini govind and jayalakshmi eshwar are good for beginners.
@Bhavana, You must try and perform where ever possible. Try and choreograph your own pieces whenever you can. Secondly reading related books and poetry will help you a lot. Also teaching is another way of keeping yourself in track. learning carnatic music or vocal also helps.
@Kalpesh, Thank you
Thank you so much for your tips. If there is anything else, i will get back to you.
Bhavana
Hi anjali,
Where can i find related books and poems in bangalore to improve my knowledge in bharathanatyam? Also which CDs you recommend for me to choreograph?
I love your youtube video. I’ve always wanted to learn Bharatanatyam ever since i was a child and my parents ahve sent me to classes but ive never went to the point where i did my arangetam. Im wonder if you could help me do classes through out webcam, so that i know some what of it rather than nothing ! I also bookmarked your youtube vedio ad im going to practise it and make sure i can do it. !
@ Bhavana, check vedam books .com and kalakendra. You get books and audios on the respective sites. I am not aware of its availability in Bangalore.
@kya, sure will send you a mail regarding the classes. Glad that the videos help you to practice.
Hi,
I am male. i have learnt bhartanatyam in kalakshetra style for a while. i just have a few questoins. nowadays is it allowed for am male to dress as female in the dance. Also i like to know who to wear a bharatanatyam practise saree. thanks.
Hi Bhavana,
In bangalore few books on bhatanatyam, and a whole lot of bharatanatyam DVDS available in landmark -forum.
ihi, i am from london, and I need some rescources from you. Could you please contact me. thank you
@Kausalya. A practice saree is worn just like the normal saree. Only thing the number of pleats are less, to increase the length of the pallu, so much so that you are able to wrap around your waist once.
Hey suresh,
Thank you so much for the information. I will definitely check in forum………
Hi Anjali,
Thanks a lot for the information. just google around a bit. and found some info like follows.
Its made of cotton and worn over a salwar? ( pajama).
and in http://www.shubhanu.com/dance-costume-stitching/practice-costume/practice-costume.htm , it is mentioned the width is shorter than normal saree and the length longer.and i guess saree is worn upto the knee level.
Its been so nice to see the blog. to see it when it was hosted on wordpress to an registered domain. Great going. I guess you are doing this site with a big heart. Thanks a lot again.
Can you post JATISWARAM dance to your website and my email ID ( vanshika.rajeev@gmail.com )
your dance videos are adorable and amazing.
Shall I know what is your dancing style best know as, that is, is it kalasehtra style or pandanallur…..?
@Ramya, Thank you. The style is Pandanallur.
@Vaniska, site will be gradually updated with these videos. Thank you.

Hello Anjali Nandan,
I’m Yogen from Malaysia, i’ve started my Barathanatyam classes 3weeks ago. I’m practising the 3rd variation of tattadavu at the moment. I’m a little confused of Ramya’s comments on 15june 2010. Are there different styles in Barathnatyam?
Kalasehtra style… ? Pandanallur style..?
How many styles are there in total?
How do i find out what’s the style i’m learning?
Is it rude to ask my master about the style of her teaching?
@ Auroshree, sure will send it to you.
Namaskar mam. I am 34 years old and learning Bharatnatyam from last six months. I am based in Jaipur, Rajasthan. I find your site very useful to get a better understanding of whatever I learn in my dance class. It gives valuable support to explore new horizons. Hearty thanx for being there and help people like me who find very little resources around. Please suggest me if there is some recorded material available to practice different adavus at home. Though I have got some video CDs of demo dance lessons but I want to practice in continuation. Are there recorded ‘bols’ available which I can use for repetitive practice of different Adavus. Please guide.
@Anju, I have all the bols (sollukettas) uploaded on the website. Check on Index page under Audio section. That might help. You can also download it.
Thanx mam…I downloaded it..its very helpful. It provides clear understanding but just one minute practice.I have been looking forward for a bit longer recitation..is it available anywhere!
Anju there is a cd by Madhurai Murlidaran On Adavus and korvais. Check this link

Thank you for the good, clear photos of the hastas and the accessible information. This supplements my learning very well! I am a student of Soorya Dance Co, St Louis since Jan 2009.
Thanks Cherie. appreciate your support.
Anjali,
I am going to 5th grade in this fall. I have been learning Bharatanatyam for the past 2 years and recently my parents changed my dance teacher for the better attention of the teacher and my better learning. But what I learnt during the last 2 years is a little different from what my new teacher is teaching. What I learnt is tanjore style and my new teacher follows kalakshetra style. With a very little knowledge that I have your style appears to my like tanjore style. Would you please confirm if my understanding is right. As my teacher follows kalakshetra, would you please help me out with the material on kalakshetra style.
I appreciate your help and thanks in advance.
Ritika, I follow the Pandanalur Style. The basics remaining the same, there are slight differences in movements. check the learning CD’s by jayalakshmi eshwar.
Thank you so much for your wonderful website!!!! It is very helpful!!
you are providing me a chance to know abt the dance form i always wanted to learn. i am learning through your videos, i would like to post them to you as a video for your guidance.
guru namaskar to you
madam,
i liked ur site very much. i wanted to know what is the right age for learning bharatnatyam(, though u have mentioned that the right age is 5 years) since my daughter has turned 4 1/2 years this july and she is very slim and short. So I wanted to confirm whether 6 years will be suitable for learning bharatnatyam?/
Hi Anjali ,
I am Gowri, i learned nattu adavu and tatta adavu when i was a student, but i couldn’t continue. Now am 24yr old and keen in learning Bharatanatyami Is it ok to start learning Bharatanatyam in this age? i have already downloaded most of your videos in you tube.Do you recommend any advice as am beginner.(possibe mail me @ )Thanks
Regards
Gowri ..
@Sudha, yes 6 years would be good to start. Actually there are no rules when your child can start learn. All depends on your child’s interest and focus.
Hi Anjali,
Thank you so much your online lessons. These days when art is becoming commercial I appreciate your efforts for making it reach to people who cannot afford it..I learnt Bharatanatyam for 5 years and but have no much grip on talam.as a result I’am not able to compose any dance songs.Abhinaya part is easy for me but the beats is tough to compose.I would like to learn nattuvangam part in bharatanatyam. Could you please upload some of your videos about it..
please i want to know where i can get bharatanatyam basic learning DVD’s.
i want to buy. i am very much intresed in bharatanayam………..
plz let me know.
thanks a lot for such a nice site. i am learning steps…
Hi Anjali,
I liked the basic info you provided,it helps all the poeple to learn bharathanatyam,I am bharathanatyam dance teacher, one of my student is doing arengatram, this is my first arengetram with that student,so can u give me some information about Natuvangam, how can i practise the natuvangam?waiting for your reply….
hi
u r giving a lot informations. i dont know anything in this field.
my daughter is now 4 and half yrs old. may i know a guru in
chennai like u?
Hi Mam,
It is a pleasure to see this website. My daughter who is 7 yrs is going to start classes (Kalakshetra style) here in Gurgaon.
Do you recommend any good DVDs or online videos uploaded by you for beginners?
thank you for all the hard work you have put in to making this website so informative and helpful! i had a question – isnt there one more adavu where the hands start in shikhara mudra and the bols are ta tai tam dhi tai tam ? i cannot find it on your website so i was wondering about it….thanks
@swathi, Books on Nattuvangam like ‘Essence of nattuvangam ‘ by kamala Rani, a CD on nattuvangam by Seetharama Sharama should help to understand the basics. But adavanced concepts you must either approach a mridangist or a teacher who can teach nattuvangam. Good luck!!
@Tulsi, Apart from mandi , it is the murka/sutral adavu. http://onlinebharatanatyam.com/2009/05/sutral-adavu-in-bharatanatyam/
Dear Anjali Madam,
Your effort is appreciable & remarkable. am having doubts regrding certain Mudras to show Caste, Divine, Curse & punya. If you could please help me to clear the above…

hi,
i hv a daughter, her age is 12 mth nw, i want her 2 learn bharatnatyam. so can u tell me wt is the age, can i start her classes.
hi, What,s up chechi?
All fine sis.
@dimple, 5 yrs would be good to start.
Dear Guru Anjali, first of all I would like to thank you for posting such a beautiful website with useful information. I’ve been learning the art form Bharatanatyam since last year. I went exclusively to Mumbai and learned for 3 months in a very intensive course. Due to some lack of time I dont have to practice at home and therefore I decided to do Ballet class in order to be more flexible and be able to sit in ‘araimandi’. I really like your website. Would love to be in touch with you and ask for your help in case I am in doubts. – I wanted to ask you whether you have or you could send me a suggestion where I could find Alarippu song. I had a recording given by my ‘Guru’, unfortunately got somehow destroyed and she hasnt been able to send it to me. Further the second part of your video where you explain Alarippu part 2 isnt available in my country… How can I watch it???? I want to apologize for posting so many lines in one go… and the same time many questions – I just love Bharatanatyam. Thank you in advance for your kind support. Warm regards from Germany, Lydia
Thanks lydia. Appreciate your interest for the art form. I have no idea why the second video should not play. Check out in some public libraries where internet is available. Will check on my side too.
Dear Anjali, thank you for such a prompt answer. I have checked in some different places. I think it is a sort of youtube policy… Is it possible for you to send me a recording of the Alarippu song (jathis, etc… for instance.. ta tey teyum ta ta dita…)… it shouldnt be that sophisticated recording I just need it for practicing. Hope this is not much to ask from my side. Just let me know if is possible for you or not. I have checked online but it’s just not the style of Alarippu I learnt. (I can defenitely manage to dance with any other talam, etc… or style.. but your style is exactly the same I learnt – Tanjavur style). Thank you in advance for your support. Wishing you a nice day.
DANYAWAAD Guru Jii… Warm regards from Germany, Lydia

Thanks a lot!!!!!!
Hi Anjali,
I liked the organization of your website. Simple and yet resourceful.
I am 30 yrs old. I have learnt Bharatanatyam when i was a child. I didnt get to pursue it for a long time, but i renewed my passion and interest once i was grown up ie after my 20′s… I am currently preparing for my arangetram with my guru. I am a mother to a 3 yr old now and age/lifestyle is taking a toll on my feet on account of my regular practise from adavus and other stamina building exercises. My feet grew really tired and weak, had severe foot/ankle pain for 2 weeks and i am under medication. The doctors have asked me to take it slow.
I want to know how long it would take to build up stamina for a performance like “arangetram”. Since i have other responsibilites with my family, i do not want to take too long a time either. I have seen most people take 6 months to 1 year(people who have quite a solid background) for this.
Thanks!
Aruna.
Aruna, I am not sure what is your pain due to. But recently me and some of my friends who have learnt natyam long time back, got together for a performance. After the first day of practice one of my friend felt immense pain around the ankle area. She was an active body during her teens and later got inactive after pregnancy and child birth. It was after three whole sedentary years one fine day she started the practice. She is now being treated for ligament and meniscus tear. What I learnt is, before anybody wants to get into a dance schedule they must first atleast for a week or two start with exercises like walking or cycling. These basic activities will prepare you for vigorous dance sessions. Experienced teacher’s say that you must start your practice with adequate warm up and cool down exercise after practice. I would say you could target your arangetram 1 or two year down the line and perform the same piece that you learnt for the arangetram. That way you can take it easy and you have a long time to assimilate and practice.
Great work anjali , nice encouraging work ..
you are beautiful .
Hi Anjali,
My daughter just started going to the classical dance and I wanted to make her practice at home aswell..then I came across your website..it is really good and very very baby spoon feeding for the beginers. Thank you so much for posting the classical dance online, it definetly helps people like us.

i just loved your blog! too good
Thank you Anupama.
Hi Anjali,
Great to see you blog. Iam really loving it.
I have also been a trained dancer in Bharatnatyam and more of Kuchipudi.
I have learnt for 9 years and have done Visharad in Bharatnatyam.
I have started taking classes here in Banglore.
But I want to join you so that I don’t leave my practice and passion for dance.
Please let me know about your suggestions.
Thanks & Regards,
pallavi
We loe you Anjali. Thanks for making it available to everyone through this format.
Panna
Anjali Nandan,
I would love to hear from you about the basics, I too began learning BharathNatyam recently, I learnt it when I was a child too, but I stopped for almost 15 years and now learning again. I live in HErndon VA. I want to Hastha mudras and Early Adavus (Steps) from you in addition to the dance school I attend.
Thank you,
Vijaya.
This is the best site I have found on BN. Very descriptive and easy illustrations. Gee haa, to me you are an expert! I am training to teach a fusion aerobic class that uses mudras for ailments of repetitive strain injuries. I just married into the Indian culture this year and absolutely love the different forms of Indian dance, esp. Bhangra. I’ll be going to Mumbai next month for the final few days of the Dance Festival and hope to be able to participate as well as immerse myself in dance. Do you have any suggestions for an English speaking studio to take a random walk-in? Keep up your hard work, this website is wonderful.

@badshah, I shall soon make a post of programs that you might want to visit.
@Meenal, Happy to know you are Madhuri tai’s student. Thank you for the compliments. I am sure, we as madhuri tai’s students would always be thankful to her. I have met couple of readers here who too are her students. Thanks once again.

@pankaj, The best could be if you can record during the class. You can talk to the teacher and decide mutually. Reference materials by Shrekala bharat and priydarshini govind are available in online shops like Kalakendra.
Hi Anjali . It was wonderful info about the Bharat Natyam — it has helped me in my profession of script writing . I do anchoring of a lot of Arangetram shows for which I write the script myself. Thanks.

Hi Anjali,
i really liked your webpage, dance is my passion and classical dance is been my dream from childhood. I did bharatnatyam in school for two years but after that i could not get oppurtunity to learn. Its so great to learn here the basics. They are really very helpful. Now i have started learning the basics. Thank u so much.

Hi Anjali…
Nice to see you share your knowledege on Bharathnatyam.
i appreciate it.
I had learnt this dance form for 7 years from a kalamandalam trained teacher in kerala and wanted to follow my career in it, but drifted away and its been almost 13 years since i performed this dance. I live in pune (pashan) and have been in search of a good acclaimed bharathnatyam trainer around pashan , with whom i would get opportunities of stage performances. If you can share any of your contacts in this area, i would highly be grateful to you.
Wishing you all the best in the coming year.
Thanks.
@Deepthi, Thanks and good wishes to your family too. I am aware of dancers like Sucheta chaphekar, Shashikala Ravi, and Parimal phadke who are well known dancers. You can approach them.
I love the way you teach bharatnatyam(:
I have been watching your videos on youtube for a long time now, and I thought it would be great if you could post up a video on gale bujhanga? I’m not sure how to spell it, but here is a video of shobana dancing to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlykh19lTOo
I don’t want an instructional video, but just a clear version of you doing this dance. Thankyou!
Dear Anjali,
Excellent web site and I have no words to appreciate the effort you have put into explaining the significance of each aspect of Bharata Natyam in detail. Your website is so rich in information that it’s not only useful for new learners, but also for teachers.
To briefly introduce myself, I have learnt Bharata Natyam for abt 15 years from guru Savithri Jagannatha Rao, Chennai based on Kalakshetra style and currently teaching Bharata Natyam in United Kingdon. My dance school ‘Kalalaya Bharata Natyam School’ is located in a place called Ashford(Surrey) in United Kingdom. I notice that many people check with you for dance teachers, please can you refer me to people in the United Kingdom?
Thanks
Arthi

Is there any chance that you could do a video on it? It would help me out alot and Im sure that other may benefit from it too!
Please could you get back to me!<3

Hi Anjali,
Your web site is a very useful and informative.I appreciate your work and keep going.Wish you good luck.
Ms. Nandan,
Its so kind of you to bring up such an innovative idea of spreading interest for classical dance styles.
I too have been a student of Late Mrs. Madhuri kelkar and I studied dance under her for nearly 10 years. However, now i have lost my touch into dancing but i always wish to complete my Arangetram, as this was one of my Madam’s wish. Hope I could complete, However, this effort is truly adorable and encouraging. Kelkar madam will surely be happy in heaven .
@Diana, glad to meet one more student of Madhuri teacher. I wish you good luck with your Arangetram. Thanks for your kind words.
Hi,Anjali .. I looked at some of your video’s on you tube and found them very nice . I’m 25 years old and started learning bharatnatyam now. It was my childhood dream to learn . On a daily basis how long do you think I should practice and how long will it take for me to get to a certain level. Do you think age matters?
Hello Anjali,
This is a wonderful website on Bharatnatyam, esp for people who live overseas to continue and rediscover our culture. By your teaching methods that I have found to be clear and explanatory, I am able to practice the basics giving more meaning to the dance which I had learnt long time ago when I was a child.
Keep continuing and hope to see more updates.
Hi Anjali,
I was reading through blogs, and came across this one, which actually gave me a ray of hope to start and pursue my long time dancing passion. The Hastas demonstrated are really fabulous. Just wanted your suggestion on whether i could learn dance through these online sessions, along with my job and family..I have always loved dance, but couldn’t go ahead with it for various reasons, now is it possible to reach my dreams… Your suggestion would be of great help
Hi Anjali,

Hi Anjali,
I am a 28 year-old Tamil speaking Singaporean and very much into learning Bharatanatyam. I was forced into Bharatanatyam class in my childhood days while I was more interested to attend some Martial Arts classes (I was pretty much a tomboy growing up)…. I dropped out after few months and forgot about it (I didn’t get to learn Martial Arts as well).
Just few years ago, my teenage niece (distant relation actually) did a Arangetram in both India and Singapore and we were all very proud of her. It didn’t even occur to me then…. but about 3 years later, I happen to watch a Bharatanatyam video of young Harinie Jeevitha on youtube… Thats when it hit me…about how much of our tradition (especially Tamil tradition) I have missed out on. It felt like a deep hole in my chest. But I thought I was already too old to start learning Bharatanatyam….
To learn Natyam at 28? I would be laughed at by everyone….right?
Recently, I shared my feelings to a very close friend of mine (who has some Bharatanatyam Background in her late teens as well as childhood days)…. And she felt the same as me….
We then decided to find a Guru or join a school to learn this art and now we just started our first steps…. This time around I’m definitely gonna go all the way!!
I was comforted by the fact that the famous Kalashetra co-founder Rukmini Devi Arundale herself just picked up Bharatanatyam around the age of 29-30ish and she gave her first public performance just about 2 years after learning it…. and she reformed the ancient Devadasi style of dance called Sadhir to current day Bharatanatyam….
I’m not saying I’m gonna learn it in few short years… but its encouraging to know that such great legend started at around that late age considering the majority of current day beginners of Bharatanatyam.
Finally, your blog site is awesome! Since my friend have lot more experience in this dance form then me…. I was feeling guilty to slow down the entire sessions… Now with the help of your blog, I’m beginning to show much improvement and picking things up much faster rate. Thanx a lot and do kindly continue to share your knowledge about this great ancient Art.
P.S: Post more videos! (especially on all the Adavus)
@NDL, I have students learning in their 40′s, you are much younger . Please continue learning. I shall keep updating often. Thanks
@Aditi, please visit http://www.narthaki.com/bhnatyam/bhdivi.htm and find a institute around your place.
Hi Anjali,
I just happened to stumble upon this website and found it very interesting.
Could you please upload videos or atleast audios of the Hasta Viniyoga slokas?
i too love bharathanatiyum i am learning it from the age of 7 till now………indian classical dance is awesome
i saw your videos on youtube they are really nice
Hi Anjali,
May I know which Bharatanatyam school you are based from?
After reading about Bharatanatyam, I found out there are various different schools… namely, Pandanallur, Vazhuvoor, Kalakshetra and Thanjavoor…. Besides these is there any other forms of dance schools around still?
Whats the main difference from each of these schools…?
I know Vazhuvoor is less angular as compared with Kalakshetra or Pandanallur… and their Adavu steps are different, somewhat…..and some school still have the Sringara Rasa in their dance form…
If possible, do try to list and describe the various forms and the main differences of the all known existing Bharatanatya schools… I feel that its quite vital in order to bring about more awareness of this ancient classical dance.
The Shocking part is, almost all of the Bharatanatyam dancers I’ve across so far in person lack the knowledge about these different schools of thought…. I heard there are various stages in Bharatanatyam as a educational level… from Merit cert holders to those doing a Diploma, Degree and even a PHD… Does the folks who pusue all these get to study about all these various schools? Is there actually a written paper for Bharatanatyam?
I feel its important for a person to know what they are doing, (learning) besides just practicing and memorizing dance steps…
But still… you have pointed out and explained various steps and what they mean… Good job on that, and thank you for encouraging words… people just beginning to learn it in their 40s is boosting enough for a late beginner like me.
Hi Anjali,
I just came across your site while looking for Bharatanatyam classes in London. Not sure if there are any, so thinking of going to India for a year to do a course. I learnt dance as a kid and after a long gap in College, but the teacher never let me go furhter than the Adavus. So I quit. Now I am 31 and wish to learn so that I can also take classes in London. Do you this this is possible at this age? Also is your dance Mysore style? Your site is very very useful. Thank you for the lovely site.
@Cauvery, I follow the pandanallur style. Yes you could learn if you serious and committed. Glad you like the site. Thanks
@NDL, I follow Pandanallur style. Infact I really don’t care about the style one learns. Because it hardly matter’s when you get to the advanced levels. What matter’s is your Angashuddi and how precisely you can convey the message to the audience. I have read Dhananjayan sir’s article where he say’s that there are only two types of dances: good dance and a bad dance. Now as I am by myself and learning and working , I pick up everything that I like, irrespective of the styles. It would be wise to stay away from analyzing the styles and spend more time in learning from whatever source you are exposed to.
Hi Anjali!
This is a wonderful site you have maintained. I have started learning Bharatnatyam recently (at the age of 27 – I always wanted to do that – am finally doing it now!). And I refer to your site frequently for tips and to just learn more about the dance form.
I must say you have put in a great effort here! Its really remarkable! Thanks a lot for this wonderful site!
Regards,
Anupriya
This is absolutely wonderful. Thanks for your contribution. There are lot of us who can benefit from this. As much as I am happy that this art form is flourishing in the United States, I also feel sad to see people with minimum skills completing arangetram and contributing to the downfall of this wonderful art. I am going to make my daughter visit this site regularly…I will too. Keep up the good work! Thank you again.
hi mam, thank for this site mam.. i love barathanatyam soo much but, i don’t know barathanatyam… but much interested in classical dance… thank you mam ….
Dear Anjali
I’am 33 yrs old.now I started leanrning Bharatnataym.Since childhood very interested but could not get oppurtunity to learn. Now I got good guru.
My request is that please you send the VCD or DVD of your basic adavus steps.
Thanks.
Maya
this is not as good as my teachers website!!!! hahah and yes i do learn bharatanatyam i am on grade 2!!!!
can I learn for free? I am 40+
@Priti, you can always see the videos which are available for free. But to have someone correct you with steps, then you have to join the course which involves fee.
Hi Ms. Anjali,
Nice to see a site which can help more and more people get into this divine art.. I’ve a die hard passion for baratnatyam, but my story is too long.. Actually i learnt baratanatyam from the age of 7 or so. My father was in a transferrable job and so we had to pack up every two years.. though the style of the dance doesn matter, everywhere i went, i was told tat they style they follow was different and i was advised to start from thattadavu, even when i had completed it.. so the story goes, i’d always reach pushpanjali or alarippu and again, in the next place i’d start thattadavu.. At last by God’s grace, i came to chennai and got a great great opportunity to learn from Mrs. Meenakshi Chittaranjan. I learnt for three years with her, and was deciding to get with her in a Gurukulam Style so tat i can take my steps towards the prepartion of a typical proffessional dancer, BUT VERY VERY UNFORTUNATELY again the story of my father’s transfer and stuff started and i had to discontinue due to family situations.. after tat marriage, kid and all those stuff which led to a situation tat i’m not even able to practise.
Now i’m 27 and i’ve a 2 yr old kid ( i had a C section).. i felt it was God’s gift tat i’ve a daughter and of course i wanted one so tat at least i can fulfil my dream thro her (and this dream story is continuing only as a dream since three generations and the dream was started by my Mom who is no more).. so was just thinking to start once again my Most Loved Passion..
so i just wanted to know will the C section i’ve undergone would b a barrier and i’m planning for my next baby after a year or so, so ‘ll tat also be a barrier??
and from Mrs. Meenakshi Chittaranjan Mam, i”ve learnt till jathiswaram and if i practise and send u the videos, can u correct me if i’m wrong somewhere?? if so how to send u??
SORRY FOR WASTING YOUR TIME BY A LONG LONG RESPONSE.. BUT PLEASE DO FIND TIME TO REPLY.. let me be a squrriel helping Rama who is taking this divine art to homes worldwide.. hats off to your job
@Vidhya, Glad that you have been benefited. God bless! Yes you can send me your videos or upload on youtube, shall keep adding comments that might help you. C-section should not be barrier in pursuing your passion. There are many dancers pursuing their carrier inspite of surgery and injuries.
hey anjali this is a great effort on your part
i just wanted to know how can i get jatis online not jaatis
the jatis used in varnam, jatisvaram etc.
@Sonam, jatis for Bharatanatyam Cd by Mr Anirudha might help. check this link http://www.raaga.com/channels/carnatic/moviedetail.asp?mid=cl00787
@Adriana, A series of CD’s and books on karnas by Dr Padma subramaniyam is available on many online website. That will help help.
Great great website to share your excellent efforts at promoting the dance form you are passionate about! My best wishes are with you, Anjali!
Hi Anjali, I have learnt Barathnatyam in my childhood but was not able to continue furthur. Now again i have started learning from this site . It is very useful for me . The demonstrations given are very clear. Thank you so much Anjali. I wish to do Arengetram now, can you help me how to proceed, i dont have a guru to lead me now. Can you help me to proceed Anjali.
Namskar,
I am very happy to have found your instruction videos. I wasnt sure , at first, if it would be appropriate to imitate classical Indian dance, but after finding your welcoming and very helpful videos, i decided to honor this art form by learning it and proudly performing it in my dance artist community. I just adore not only the movements but also the meaning behind them. What a thrill it is to experience this beautiful culture in this particular way. However, i do have a question. Im trying to find the complete music to all the dances you use in your demonstrations. I see a bunch online and on different websites but im not sure if they are the ones you use or if they are anywhere close. I would like to know where to look or how to order the dance music that best corresponds with your training videos. (Natesha Kautukam, Allarippu, and Pushpanjali)
Another question i have is, how can i get a performance dhoti or learn how to tie the normal one i already have to fit this dancing?
Once more, I thank you sincerely for your wonderful work and accurate teachings!
-Markandeya M.
@Markandeya, Appreciate your positive feedback. I like Kalakendra . com for my audios. They have the neatesha kautukam audio. Apart from that I have the pushpanjali audio link in the post. Regarding the dhoti, I hope I can find something for you.

Hi Anjali,
Dance has been my life and I had to stop for couple of years due to unforeseen reason. I thought I lost touch of dance but as I watched your blog, it helped me to refresh my memory of what I had learnt since I was 6. Dance will never die…It lives forever. Thank you for doing this for all the dance lovers.
Thank you for providing this information.
I am a Btech student and am working on a project related to Bharatnatyam dance.
I am interested in knowing how the single hand gestures meanings change with change in hand positions.
like padmakosha when near mouth could mean eating, elsewhere can have other meaning.
Could you please help me with this?

Hi Anjali,
I am 30 and just started learnign Bharatanatyam from an academy in Mumbai. Since childhood I had an inclination over the same but didn’t get a chance to learn this passion of mine. I have finished just one session and covered Tattadavu in 5 variation. Can you suggest some warm ups before practising Bharatanatyam as my legs weren’t supporting me to sit in the Aramandi posture to continue with the dance. Also was keen in knowing in how much time can one perfom the Arangetam.
http://ingeniousbharatanatyam.webs.com/
this is our project website i have given a link to your website hope u wont mind
sure shubhen. Good luck.
@sindhu, if you start now you should be able to complete one margam with adequate practice in 4yrs time. Do basic relaxing exercises followed by Tatta adavus and kuditta metta. They are great work out for the legs. Always begin dancing only after a simple warm up sessions, working your joints adequately. Else you might sprain or injure.
hai Anjali,
am learning bharatnatyam for the past 7 years, i finished ma arangetram on 20th jan 2008. i still feel tat i shud learn a lot in bharatanatyam. the style in wch i learnt was vazhuvoor stye. and nw since am in class 12 i hav been paused ma classes. ma guru is busy with ma juniors and she is nt taking a good care for us. i want to learn a lot in dance.i have no one to guide me in dance. im sure you can show me the right path.

Hi there Anjali and all the fans of BN.
I just want to tell, that I am a guy from germany and I learned BN for many years.
For me this exotic dance was sometimes a bit strange to me, but it`s true, one of the best exercises one could do for head and body.
All the best.

The way you have posted resources under this blog is impressive.I am sure it would benefit and let the learners save some time too by cutting down learning time in keeping manual notes. This notwithstanding the usual benefits of having everything written down by ones own hand.
thanks a lot.a request- can the adavus be put on the bolg with dance notations?
i was wondering. can you post videos of you doing the pathaka hasta viniyoga, thripathako viniyoga and so on. it will be helpful.

Hi Anjali!

I love to learn Bharatanayam from my childhood days but I couldn’t get an opportunity after marriage I came to US. Now really happy after seeing your website. Please guideme how to start step by step . Thank you so much for your workout…cheers.
hi. i want to learn bharatanatyam online. please tell me the sequence that i should follow to learn bharatanatyam
I am a choreographer for our Fall dance concert and our theme was weddings. I knew no one would want to represent Hindu culture and so I took it upon myself, loving the rich styles of Bharatanatyam and the Hindu wedding rituals!
I have since been told, as my heritage is of mostly Western European and Native American decent that I would be “Appropriating” Indian culture. So I decided to do a modern dance style with some BharataNatyam influence. Still got yelled at for it. In my mind the word ‘appropriating’ is stealing and disrespectful, but I have nothing but respect and love for Indian culture having been raised Buddhist. I know Hare Krishnas believe the Buddha was just an incarnation of Krishna. At my temple we were taught stories from the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita. I just wanted to know, I suppose, what your thoughts and feelings are about non Indian persons dancing BharataNatyam, Kathak, Odissi, or any other traditional indian dances and also your take on using the mudras and some of the steps and using it in another dance art form is? I would love to show you the piece when it is finished and I would like to ask you if you feel it is offensive. I am sorry but this has really bothered me and my teacher and I have butted heads so to speak about it. I in no way mean disrespect but I would like your honest opinion!
I also want to thank you for the efforts you have put in to making this available to people. I had been using the AlaPadma without realizing it’s actual meaning, so I looked it up and it absolutely means what I was using it for, which excited me and so I have been exploring your website ever since last night! I appreciate your time and efforts and thank you again from the bottom of my heart for this wonderful resource! Namasta!
Ashlie
Dear Ashlie, When ever I see a non-Indian performing Bharatanatyam, I feel inspired seeing the hard work they put forth and dedication they show towards learning it. They are ready to leave their countries come to India and learn. Amazing!!!
As far as combining two or more style are concerned, it can be very tricky. Unless you are trained in both the styles, one may not be able to give justice to both. Hence it is hard to keep up the quality with half knowledge or no training at all. Example: if I am trained in Bharatanatyam and want to use Ballet techniques, I will not be able to give justice to ballet, because of lack of training in the subject. And it might look funny too. Watch the link below, they have beautifully blended styles together.
Also I thank you for the words appreciation. That will keep me motivated.
WOW!!! Thank you Miss Anjali! That is exactly what I am talking about! I really was having a hard time visualizing it but they really did a fantastic job, I am incredibly impressed! You know, I’ve been looking for a few weeks now on youtube for something like and have found nothing even close! Amazing! As far as misrepresenting the dance form, I completely understand, I am in no way ready to tackle any Bharata Natyam, but feel comfortable in the few mudras I will be using, being fully aware of their meanings and general uses. You are much the reason for that! Thank you so much!
Ashlie
Pranams! I would like to have the Sanskrit slokas of the 24 Mudras in Hastha Lakshana Deepika. This is for a book we are preparing for traditional Indian Shilpakala. Can you help.
Dear Ma’m,
Thank you very very much for providing us such helpful blog with detailed explanations. Being a beginner till now I remembered everything by counts and in numbers. Your website is helping me to understand movements and also actual terminology to be used to communicate.
Warm Regards,
Sejal.

Hello from Cairo:
Just THANKS for our videos. I am now up to visharu adavus and
still going strong.
I am wondering what school of dance you learned what we see
on the videos. Does it resemble Klalecshetra at all?
Well, back to practice
I hope to visit Indai for the Bharata Kali Conference in Madras.
My former guru was Adyar Lakshman.
Best wishes.
could u give all grade tips like theory paper
@Sahana, Click on the link of the song and you will be directed on how to download. You start by practicing what was taught to you and slowly moving to choreographing some dance pieces. That will add to your learning.
Anjali,I really appreciate your open mentality. You dance lessons are really helpful for everybody.GOD bless you more & more.Thanks.
its great to have such kind of persons like you. You will be an inspiration to the younger generations.
Hi Anjali,
Firstly, Let me thank you of this initiative of using modern technology in enabling another channel for enhancing the reach to those who love Bharatanatyam. I am no expert in this field but had a great appreciation of the richness this dance form brings to our culture. I am a male and in late 40s but do practice regularly Yoga. Recently I am feeling to leverage my yogic experience and see if it helps in getting myself started “atleast” in the basics of Bhatanatyam. Do you think if there is a chance for me to give it a try and experience this divine dance on my own rather than just observing others doing the dance. I also feel my regular yoga practice will enable me to keep a strong focus in learning this woderful danceform. Pls. advise
Ma’m,
We are in Saudi Arabia. My daughter is very much interested in dance. But we don’t have a Guru here, so we like to follow your dance steps videos. Is it correct Ma’m ?
Thank you
Hi anjali I’ve been learning about añitos barathanatyam, and I know a lot to learn, I learned also the Pushpanjali, but I have music and teachers do not want to give the music, I’ve seen you put a wonderful Pushpanjali on your site, as it could get, do not ask for much but if you think you could share with me. The truth always need videos, music and everything to keep learning, and always watch your videos I love, Thanks for sharing all that, blessings
@Raghu, It is never too late to learn. Just remember our body will not be as supple as a 20 yr old. Keeping that in mind will not let you down, when you see you are not able to jump around like the young dancers. It is a great exercise to keep you fit and relaxed.
Hi Anjali,Thanks a lot for this webpage. This is the best online bharatanatyam i ever seen..
Hello Anjali,
My daughter is 2.8 yrs old.She is interested in dance.I want her to learn bharatnatyam. I am not sure what is the right age for the same? Can u please advise me?

Dear Ms.Anjali,
I am 28 years old and would like to learn bharatnatyam. How long does it take to complete this dancing course and to be able to perform arengatram? Is my age is to old to learn this dance? Need your kind advise in this matter. TQ
@Thulasi, you can start learning any time . Atleast 4 yrs considering your age to finish one margam. Good age to start learning would at 6 or 7 yrs.

Hello, ur website is surely impressive and reveals massive efforts. I highly appreciate.
I am extremely thrilled to read ur guru latebSmt Madhuri Kelkars’ name. If its her from Kalyan, India, then even I am her student.
It was after a long time that I read her name and was extremely moved. I owe a Nirtya alankar degree to her. Hope to read from you.

Geetha Sharma mam. also tell me how much it will cost for arangetaram in pune if we perform in group. and let me know when can i have my own dance class. is alankar necessary to grow in this feild?
Also suggest me some gurus from nalanda in pune. as my earlier guru was from nalanda.
@Madhavi, I am not aware to nalanda teachers in Pune. Those I have heard of are Sucheta Chaphekar, Parimal Phadke and Shashikala Ravi. You can spend any where from 30000 onwards depending upon the venue etc.
thanks for the information anjali mam.
Can you break down what traditional training was like? How many hours? What practices? Ect.
@Deena, If you are talking about the gurukulam style, where the student would actually live with the guru and spend most of their time understanding the subject. The student would also participate in daily chorus at the Guru’s house such as cleaning and cooking for the family. The student would perform them with an attitude of seva bhava. Student is almost like a family member. It is almost a full time learning. Not only Natyam, but the nuances of Rhythm and music were also taught.
Hi Anjalimam,
I am thankful to your wesite and your videos. I am 35 year old from Bangalore and have started taking bharatanatyam lessons last month along with my 5 year old. Your website is very informative and is a guide for both of us.

Once again thank you for your effort. Its of great help to me and my daughter.

Thank you for this wonderful website Anjali. I have just started Bharatanatyam lessons. I find it very difficult stand in the Aradhamandal pose. My legs slope forward instead of to the sides. Will this change with practise , the other students who started with me don’t have a problem. Though they can’t hold the pose for long.
I am leaning Bharatanatyam and am going to appear for an exam very soon.Your website has been a great help!

Hi Anjali
I am father of 3 1/2 yrs. old baby girl. I can see my baby interest towards dance. Basically, we as a family not aware of all about dance.
Can you kindly suggest me how to move forward on this,
1. Do you want me to put my baby in Bharatanatyam classes.
2. If so, I stay in Bangalore, kindly suggest me to get a good guru for my baby ?
Regards
Ranjith Kumar S
I have just started to practice. It is easy to me to follow your informations and the basic steps. Hope that I will learn quickly.Thank you mam.
Dear Anjali,
I do not know abcd of dancing, recently came across your eye movement video which is exceptional and beautifully explained. I am sure this site will be a great source of information and learning for young dancers.
I sincerely appreciate your contribution towards young dancers.
Best Wishes,
Vivek
@Ranjith, I feel she is too young to start with a formal dance class. At home you guys can teach her some steps form the videos available and work with her. Make dance as play and fun. Also you can buy for her some Chelengai (bells), that might interest her more to move her legs and dance around. There are number of teachers around Bangalore. Check this link and hope fully you would find one in you locality.

Dear Anjali, the website is a great idea! I am not a dancer nor do I have any knowledge of the art-form, but I have a deep appreciation of what you people like you do! My feeling is that you should move to the next level in this sort of work so that real benefits would flow from your work. Here is something I am trying to attempt which may be useful to you! http://classicaldanceresearch.blogspot.com/2011/12/classical-dance-researchers-should-look.html
Hi Aunty! I never told you how much I loved this Website of yours! Beautiful and full of information! If you could call me. I sent you a mail just a few minutes ago. Thanks! And I am planning on learning a few dances from this website and maybe i can show them to you at Chinmaya mission one day

hello, anjali chechi, i had proper dance training under a very good dance teacher during my 11th grade but only for 7 months, and my lessons on the keralanadanam dance item for my arangettam was going on well, as i had learnt basic dance steps for 1 year when i was in 8th grade. but i had to stop the arangettem classes immediately due to various reasons. so i couldn’t do my arangettam. also as i’m 19years old now, my family doesnt think it proper for me to go to dance classes , atleast in my village. they told that i could learn the dance after 3 years after i complete my BTECH degree course, and get a job. but i cant wait as its my dream BE A DANCER so i want to learn it even if atleast 1day a week through dvds as i really want to be a bharatanatyam dancer, eventhough i’m in hostel. ur videos have renewed my hopes to be a dancer. could u PLS SUGGEST SOME DVDS so that i could learn whenEVER possible??? THANKS a lot for ur help in advance, and i wish u ALL THE BEST for inspiring many others like me who has a passion for dance.GOD BLESS YOU
@Bhavani, glad to know that this website has ignited the dormant passion in you. Well the adults are right in their own way, since only dance does not earn you enough. So do complete your Btech. You can be good academically and artistically. Visit kalakendra . com and Kalakriya . com you will find many dance related DVD’s.
hi anjali, its an absolute pleasure to be on your blog. you have put in huge effort and given us so much of happiness.i use your blog for the training in this dance form for my daughter.keep adding continue to delight us. thanks

Hi Anjali,
I had learnt Bharatnatyam as a kid for 5-6 years and now after 15 years I have decided to resume it. I want to do my Arangetram. I had learnt till Jatiswaras. I would like to know with regular practice how long do you think I can achieve this?
Dear Anjali,
I am Falguni Jhaveri residing at Mumbai, India.
I myself am a Gold medalist visharad in Bharat Natyam Bhruhad Gandharva Gujarat.
I am practicing this art as a profession locally and am keen to learn more.
As to keep myself update, I happened to visit youtube and found your clips.
Firstly the clips were really educative and I appreciate your work.
I was quite happy to see them and I believe it would be of great help if you could allow me a compilation of all the work on a cd or share it online maybe.
Do revert on my email id soon.
Thanks,
Falguni.
Can you tell me how to prepare for Dance exams (like Nritya Visharad etc.,)? I am looking for the same for my daughter. I don’t have any idea about dance. Also her teachers are not able to give any good info. Thankyou.
i want to know that the same hand gesture has different meanings. can i get a site, where these meanings are shown with the same hand gesture. for example pataka has so many meanings, how to demonstrate it differently.
Dear Anjali,
I just heard about this website this evening and was so curious to see if it was possible to consider trying to learn Bharata natyam on line. I have been reading through many of these comments, fascinated by all of it and your thoughtful responses! I also want to say first that I rarely write in posts like this but was moved to say to Vaishali: I am a 48 year old non-Indian woman who began to learn Bharata natyam with a teacher in a my city in the Midwest 3 years ago (who has since stopped teaching in my area, so now I must travel 2 hours one way for lessons!). It has been incredibly challenging on many levels, physically, mentally…but I am very committed to the practice and wish to continue to learn as long as I am able. I have been practicing yoga and an eclectic mix of dance forms (as well as even martial arts for a couple years) and am a performing artist for many years, but nothing prepared me for rigor of Bharata natyam. I have asked myself many times – what do I think I am doing, learning a dance form entirely outside of my own culture of such a level of complexity and physical challenge that young Indian girls generally start at 5 or 6? But, I am hooked and I feel it is a lifelong practice, and perhaps even a devotional one at that, certainly at the very least, I am fully dedicated. It is not a piece of cake to start, that is for sure. My teacher told me it would be at least two years before I even felt like I was actually dancing, and having passed the 3 year point, I would agree with him. It takes me a very long time to learn one dance (especially as I travel and have other obligations in life). I am only now learning my third dance, after learning the adavus. But I can say that YES, it can be done in your 40′s, but as Anjali said, the speed and flexibility may never quite be attained, as it would were one starting at a young age and the body ‘grows up’ with the dance embodied. I doubt I will ever be able to do a good ‘third speed’, but I accept my limitations as the same time I enjoy every part of the learning …and practice regularly — which is -really- important……
Hi!
I came across your website on a quest to find dance classes in pune .I am currently pursuing my law degree . I had commenced my classes at the age of fie and continued till I was thirteen .However i did not do my arrangetram .Now after these many years I want to start again as my love for dance has been roused again. I still remember certain dance items that I had learnt like the kautukams and allaripu and jatiswaram vaguely while the others I am confident of brushing up.can you suggest any classes for me
@Cherie, thanks. You said it all. It would take an eternity to master this Art form alone. What we can do best is enjoy the journey gracefully. Good luck and Bon voyage
@Anjali, i am not sure where in pune , but the teachers I have heard of are Sucheta chaphekar, parimal phadke, shashikala ravi. Google for them.
@Divya, may be in 3 yrs time. With classes thrice a week.

Hi Anjali,
I really need advice from you. I was never encouraged by my dad to learn Bharatanayam so i could never learn. I absolutely love it so I joined the classes at the age of 29. My husband supports me for which I really feel happy. I am also a Bollywood dance performer and I do paid performances. But recently I injured my knee slightly and my knee makes a lot of grinding/crunching sounds. I am really worried that I cannot dance like other dancers…what do you think?
HI Anjalidi,
Thanks for the great work… It was my all time dream to learn Bharathanatyam but because of poverty and helpless condition of my parents I couldnt spend money on learning this great art. Now I am well educated and working as a Asst Manager in one of the IT company. Your work has made my dream come true. I tried to download the vedios but it was very slow and I couldnt download it. Do you have any DVD’s or CD’s that I can use for my learning. Its my Humble request.

Hi Anjali,
Great and Wonderful Site!. I Learnt Bharatanatyam in my childhood days for 5 years and then discontinued due to studies. This is really a helpful site to start my practice again. The explanations are really clear and helpful. Though this great art is of great interest to me, i have not taken this as a passion till today. After seeing this site, i am going to start the practice again and iam planning to become another Anjali
@Greta you have to talk to your gynecologist before you decide. Usually they say you can keep doing what you have been doing. They recommend not start any thing new.
@Brindha, This is not true , only a myth. Go ahead and learn
@Jaya,thank you. WIll have CD’s worked soon. For now many CD’s of various artists are available on kalakendra website. Check out.
@Kubera, pls consult a doctor. He should be able to guide you better. You might want increase your calcium supplements.
Anjali,
Thanks and great service!
As a further service to all, I would request you to please research and print out the original texts as it is rendered in Devanagari. The reason is that as the translations are made, and as it gets copied from one handout to another, the original word in Samskruta (‘Sanskrit’) is completely destroyed. The original word, in the absence of even one positional syllable renders a different meaning!
Even within a first word some handouts say “Nattyaa”, some say “Naatya”, some say “Natya”. Samskruta is naturally phonetic as taught in the original, but it corrupts to a different phonetics in English.
Thanking you,
Thank ou anjali now i will conmence my learnin processes:)
My daughter, she has completed her bharatanatyam now she wants go to ahead in this field so guide her.

Dear Anjali,
I am 30 and have learnt basics of various dance forms like Salsa, belly dancing and bharatnatyam. But, now I want to pursue bharatnatyam and obtain certification in this dance form. The problem is that I just delivered a baby and cannot travel to attend classes. Can I do this online? I came to know about APAA from your website. Does APAA provide online certification courses? Is there a contact number ? I visited their website but could not find much information on my queries.
Looking forward to your reply,
