Jatiswaram

Jatiswaram is another Nritta piece. Here the advaus are performed to swara patterns. Like Sa , ni , da , pa. There is no Sahityam unlike Swarajati. Every Jati is alternated by Swarams. A jatiswaram has Charanams which are sung in swarams and followed by Pallavi every time.  There can be three or more charanams.

Jatiswarams are in different Ragams and Talams. The Tanjore quartets compositions are widely performed. Some famous composition are
Kalyani ragam Rupakam
Ragamalika in Misrachapu,
Vasantha in Rupakam.

Many have been asking how is Jatiswaram different from swarajati. One obvious difference is the presence of Sahityam in Swarajati, and none at all in Jatiswaram. Jatiswaram has Jatis (rhythmic syllables) included in its compositions. It is music applied to dance. While Swarajati is a pure musical form.

I will be demonstrating the one in Kalayani Ragam. Watch the first two parts of this Jatiswaram.

    Hi, it’s really nice to have online Bharatanatyam. I am brushing up my bharatanatyam dance steps of Jatiswaram. It is really good. And I would really like to know where the Kalyani ragam jatiswaram which you have uploaded here can be available. If possible can you upload the song please.

    I am glad I found this website, we are doing a natym and I am doing this dance. My teachers says that my facial expressions aren’t that great and I agree,will it come easy to a12 year old? I am worried and when ever I start doing facial expressions I start getting shy and laughing. Can you give me some tips? I feel sad because I failed the natym before and I always get depressed thinking about it and I failed it mainly because of facial expressions. So may people in the class are way better than me at facial expressions leaving me out as usual. I’ve only been learning an year, maybe it doesn’t come that quickly?
