Adavu (The initial steps)

June 18th, 2007 by Anjali

Bharatanatyam blogger Shreenidhi has a posting on Adavu positions. The basic positions described are:

  1. ARAIMANDI- Half Seated Position.
  2. SAMAPADAM - Legs Together
  3. MANDI- Full Seated Position

The positions “Araimandi” is synonymous with “Ardhamandal” and “Samapadam” is synonymous with “Sama” mentioned in my “Day - 1″ posting.

    Hi Anjali,
I was very happy to come through this website. I learned Barthnatyam for 2 yrs when I was young but could not continue it. Now Iam 27 and love to dnace. I used to do many folk dances in school days but I was very keen on learning Barthnatayam. I was very impressed with the efforts you have put into this website. I have started to learn from this site and enjoying it. I wanted to know how many times or days we need to practise the same adavu step ( to get good posture and balance )before starting the next adavu step? I want to send my daughter (now 3yr old) to dance class, what is the minimum age to start?
    Thanks
    Love this website.

Hello Chandini, Thank you for the kind words. Regarding correct posture, I feel you must have somebody to correct you. A beginner would not be able to understand if he or she is right or wrong. Once you have the corrections with you, practicing becomes effective. Practice each step untill you can do it uninterrupted in the third speed. Kids start learning at the age of 5 and 6. Parents like you who already have some knowledge can always initiate your child.

    Hello Ansar,
Thank you. Some good books that should help you in the introduction of the dance form is Abhinaya darpanam and natyashastra which is vast. The book ” Dance dialects of India” by Ragini Devi is a good read for people like you.
What kind of Cds are you looking for?

Thanks for the hint to Dance Dialects, btw recently I aquired a DVD : “Karana Prakaranam – Marga Tradition Revived by Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam”. I bought it because it advertises to be in accord with Natyashastra. Anyhow one of my Natyashastras discovered that the Shastra is a conglomerate of various previous, unrelated books. Which makes sense to me to wait for an authoritive edition.

    Hi Anjali ,
Thank you for the great site.I’m a final year student of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur.I’ve a great interest in learning classical dance but do not have time to take regular classes. Initially I wanted to learn kuchipudi and I’ve searched for learning sites but couldn’t find a site as useful as yours. When I’ve found your site I was very happy.I’m slowly browsing through the site whenever I’m getting time. Can you make it more elaborate by giving information of mudras and all in the beginning.

    Bhavya
